5.0 étoiles sur 5 Schiff doesn't disappoint..... 28 décembre 2006
Par dongiovanni - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Volume III of Andras Schiff's much praised Beethoven sonata series has just come out. Single CD contains two `baby' sonatas (Op.49), familiar to all piano students, and Op. 14 no1 and 2 , more mature works from 1798-99, and the grand sonata Op 22 from 1800. We are past the `Pathetique' now and Beethoven's unique voice is more and more manifest. Schiff `s playing is analytical and crystal clear yet full of expression and has a singing quality so important to these pieces, especially Sonata No 10, my favorite in this group. No hesitation to recommend it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 good Beethoven rendition 15 février 2007

I feel more respect to Schiff's playing after listened to his recent lectures on all Beethoven sonatas, and bought all his current released Beethoven sonata CDs (Vol.I-III) and will get his next release when it's available. I used to think Schiff as a good Bach or Mozart interpreter but hardly would think of him as that good on Beethoven, and his new Beethoven CDs certainly have proved that I was wrong about him. This CD and others have really good sound quality and Schiff's playing is excellent to say the least. It's not to say however that I agree with everything Schiff did, and feel that his playing sometimes feels on a little 'sluggish' side, comparing with Pollini's more precise and decisive playing of Beethoven. Nevertheless, it's a good refreshing rendition of Beethoven sonata set, and I certainly would recommend everyone who's into Beethoven sonatas to get it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Early Beethoven Sonatas with two in correct order 30 juillet 2012

Volume Three of Andras Schiff's set of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas includes No. 19 & 20, and Nos. 9--11. The first two are actually the earliest of these, having been written some time in the late 1790s, close to the composition of the "Pathetique" (Sonata No. 8), and apparently intended as "house music" for gifted amateurs, similar to Mozart's "easy sonatas," such as his No. 15 in C. Beethoven had left them in his desk, probably not to be included among the published sonatas, but his younger brother Karl, Beethoven's business manager at the time, found them and took them to be published, thinking that the first of the two especially was of great interest to the public since it contains the original version of the minuet in the very popular Septet, op. 20. Beethoven was upset, of course, and Karl probably lost his job with his brother, but he may have saved these charming two movement pieces which Andras Schiff plays with the same attention to detail and drama as he gives to all these early but not minor sonatas. He's particularly good at bringing out the almost swaggering meters in the fast movements of Nos. 9 & 10, and he plays the lovely and melancholy Allegretto of No. 9, which has always sounded like a hidden English folksong, with the right balance of reserve and emotion.

I only feel that Schiff's performance of Sonata No. 11, perhaps the hardest of the 32 to interpret because of the nature of its material--seemingly trivial scales and motifs--could be better if it was played with less reserve. I feel Pollini is better here since he plays up the virtuoso elements, making more sense of the whole. Not that Schiff is bad. His performance certainly fits in well with his general view of these youthful works of a young giant. Perhaps he should have used a fortepiano, but his Bosendorfer is excellent. Good sound and production completes the package.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Classical poise 27 septembre 2014

Written by Beethoven towards the end of his first creative period, these sonatas are full of classical wit, equilibrium, musical charm and a poetic touch of the purest essence. The proceedings seem oriented to the glorious music tradition of Vienna and its exponential icons Mozart and Haydn. Moreover, a kind of subtle kinship with the latter one can be considered the two-movement conception of both sonatas op. 49. Despite their opus number, they belong to this first period of creation and exhibit the same bright line as their predecessors, No less appealing, the two sonatas op.14 are boldly individualized.

In his proper manner – sharply logical and intensely heartfelt at the same time – Andras Schiff accomplishes with his well-established craftsmanship this third installment of his recorded Beethoven complete cycle.

I have listened to a variety of pianists performing Beethoven's Piano Sonatas and to my ear, Andras Schiff 's sensitivity and subtility of touch is simply outstanding.
