Présentation de l'éditeur

With a music career spanning nearly half a century, Pink Floyd is one of the most successful rock bands in history. With more than 250 million album sales to their credit, the band remains hugely popular worldwide. Both Rolling Stone and VHIhave named Floyd one of “The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” and they continue to attract new legions of fans every single year.  They were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Their 2011 "immersion" box sets for their classic Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here albums were met with unanimous critical acclaim and prolific press. The Wall Live concert tour featuring Roger Waters was the second highest grossing concert tour in North America in 2010 (over $89.5 million dollars) and the sixth highest in the world.
In this, the first complete illustrated history of Pink Floyd from 1965 through today, author and journalist Hugh Fielder gets “behind the wall” and recounts the band’s entire history, analyzes their recordings, and provides a complete discography. Readers will discover stories behind the band’s formation, recordings, and tours, as well as the bitter disputes, both public and private. Complemented with more than 250 images, including live performance and candid off-stage photographs, as well as rare memorabilia like gig posters, concert tees, picture sleeves, backstage passes, buttons, and ticket stubs, this is the book that every Floyd fan will want on their shelf.

Biographie de l'auteur

Hugh Fielder was a news editor for Sounds, he worked at Billboard’s London Bureau, and was editor of Tower Records’ Top Magazine. Through his career, he’s shared a spliff with Bob Marley, a cup of tea with Keith Richards, a pint with Robert Plant, a glass of wine with Roger Waters and David Gilmour (not together, obviously), and a frosty stare with Axl Rose. He is the author of Punk: The Brutal Truth and Lady Gaga: A Monster Romance.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 In the Top 5 of Pink Floyd Bios 27 février 2016

So, there's a rather big disclaimer to start of this review -- what you learn from this book is really going to be dependent on what Floyd bios you've already read. I have most of the books ever published on Pink Floyd, so there was very little presented here that I didn't already know. (Although there were a couple new tidbits. The one that sticks in my mind was the fact that Floyd's contract specifically stated that no one of the "Big 4" could stake a claim to the Pink Floyd brand. In all the discussions of the Waters/Gilmour battle I've read over the years, I don't remember seeing this before).

If you are looking for intense detail, you want to go with the Schaffner or Blake books, as those two set the standard not just for Floyd books, but for rock bios in general. Nick Mason's book is a close second, with the Miles/Mabbett book rounding out the crowd. Then I would finish the Top 5 with THIS book, primarily on the strength of the visual presentation. It really is a beautifully done book, with lots of pictures I'd never seen before. And while Fielder doesn't break any new ground, what is here is factually correct.

And certainly, there are some other great, extremely detailed Floyd books that might have more info than this one ("The Press Reports", Glenn Povey's much-revised book, and The Pink Floyd Encyclopedia being prime examples), but these aren't narratives, and lack some of the overall readability the "Behind the Wall" has.

In summary, I'd recommend this book as a strong starting place for those interested in a PF bio, and then move on to some of the others when you're ready to begin your Floyd Doctorate program.

I gave this to my son as a Christmas gift and he was really surprised and he just loved it. He said it is a very good book with great pictures and information on his favorite band. He said it was "Cool". High accolades indeed.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 No new quotes or research, total duplication of other works - reads like a wikipedia article. 23 janvier 2014

I am a huge PF fan. My tastes run more to the early Floyd, including the Syd years and up through Meddle. I enjoy the later albums, but I rarely listen to them. I own at least a dozen books on PF and Syd Barrett.

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEW in this book. There are a couple pics that I have not seen before, but it is almost entirely made up of quotes published in multiple other books. No new scholarship or interviews whatsoever.

There is no "editorial slant" to the book, so it is neither pro-Roger or pro-Dave. It is one thing to be "even-handed," another to write a book on a already well-documented subject without injecting even a minimal opinion or suggestion as to why this particular book should have been written.

It is so bland and uninteresting, it reads like a wikipedia article. What a total waste of money (fortunately, not much of a waste of time, as I read the entire book in about an hour).
