Descriptions du produit

Revue de presse

“Two words best describe this volume: essential and definitive.” (Leonard Maltin)

“J.B. Kaufman’s latest book on the making of Pinocchio (1939) is masterful – and a must-have… Have a copy of the movie handy to re-watch as you read – his writing will have you appreciating Pinocchio as you have never before.” (Jerry Beck)

“This visually stunning and impeccably researched history of Disney's Pinocchio is both a revelation and a fascinating look at the development and production of what has become one of the greatest animated features of all time.” (Forces of Geek)

“Anytime J.B. Kaufman puts out a new book, you know it’s going to be out-of-this-world incredible. His newest release, Pinocchio: The Making of the Disney Epic, is no exception. It perfectly details and encapsulates the making of one of Walt Disney’s greatest masterpieces, Pinocchio.” (Rotoscopers)

Présentation de l'éditeur

In 1940, Walt Disney released his second feature film: Pinocchio, based on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 Italian children’s novel. The film was groundbreaking: it pioneered the latest animation and sound technology of the era, and established a blueprint for Disney filmmaking that remains intact today. It became the first animated feature to win a competitive Academy Award® (in fact, it won two), and earned a place on the roster of the National Film Registry. Pinocchio’s crucial role has endured decades, given its rare 100% rating on the film website Rotten Tomatoes and the lively discourse that continues to surround the film today.

To celebrate the film’s 75th anniversary this year, author J.B. Kaufman presents a complete history of the making of Pinocchio, from source material to rerelease. Pinocchio, published in partnership with the Walt Disney Family Foundation and the Walt Disney Family Museum, is an in-depth exploration of the making of the film.

Academy Award-winning animator and film historian John Canemaker says of Pinocchio: “In great detail, J. B. Kaufman reveals the struggles, triumphs and disappointments encountered by Disney and his staff during the creation of this sacred monster of a film. Woven here is a once-upon-a-time story sure to fascinate and inform readers, an exciting adventure into the inner workings of a one-of-a kind studio and team at its creative peak.”

Go behind to the scenes with stories of the inner workings of the Golden Age of Animation, the animators’ personalities and story changes like why Jiminy Cricket’s character almost got left on the cutting room floor. Over 300 photographs, illustrations and concept sketches – many of which are available for the very first time – accompany the story behind the story.

Become a part of the wild, legendary ride that was the making of Pinocchio.

Wow! I've been waiting for something like this to come out for years. Several years ago I was fortunate to work for a producer at Disney Animation who let me review a copy of a copy of the scene story breakdown, storyboards, scene script outlines and character model sheets for Pinocchio. Apart from that hand produced xerox document, a book called "Disney's Illusion of Life" and scattered material on the internet, little has been comprehensively written about this landmark Disney film and the filmmaking process. It's a beautiful book, meticulously researched and a true labor of love. Awesome job with the layout and graphics! I feel and believe this is Disney at his best most mature work. I recommend this book to any and all Disney fans. It scores a 9+ on a scale of 10. The only soft spot I can find in this book is a slight weakness in not giving enough copy to the ground breaking animation techniques, the multi plane camera invented by William Garity for the Walt Disney Studios, and the films cultural impact prior to WWII. It's important to note that the book should have devoted more pages to the thumbnail story sketches and scene sequences privy to the the various story editors working on the film. The book should have included other model sheets, layout backgrounds as well as the preliminary color studies. I know that material exists because I have seen it first hand. Hopefully in a future edition, the author will include this material and obtain it from the Disney Library Archive. Overall this book represents a note worthy scholarly achievement accessible to all.

Too often, books on Disney animation are either too heavy on images, leaving the reader wanting more in-depth information, or too heavy with text, leaving the reader wanting the ideas to be better illustrated. This book strikes a perfect balance, and is hefty enough to go into sufficient detail in both imagery and analysis to satisfy any animation fan. Beyond just the visuals, the author digs into the soundtrack as well, offering intriguing details as to the creation of both the music and sound effects. A truly must-have addition to any animation or Disney library.

I have learned by experience. Never pass on a Disney book by JB Kaufman. My appreciation for the Disney classic "Pinocchio" has increased exponentially! If you wait, you will pay the inflated prices of the after-market. My copy will NOT be for sale! Thanks, JB!

Beautiful, well written book on Walt's Masterpiece. I would recommend to all Disney fans. I've been a Disney geek for over 30 years and thought I knew a lot about the making of Pinocchio - But Kaufman's meticulous research turned up new stories and anecdotes practically at every page. Highly Recommend!
