HASH(0x90ac4f30) étoiles sur 5 All-inclusive guide to dahlias 7 mai 2014
Par Stephanie - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
Dahlias are a type of daisy, but a brilliant, diverse and exotic one that only began to become popular in the 1920's. The Plant Lover's Guide to Dahlia's presents a trove of information on the flower. I recently came into the possession of some Dahlia tubers and wanted to know more about them. I would have preferred the sections of the book presented in a different order with general information first, growing information second, landscape design third and varieties last. However, if you own the actual book, flipping between the sections isn't a big deal.

The book opens with a lot of information on landscape design with dahlias and which type of dahlias work best in different situations, in hedgerows, in pots, on borders, and for cut flowers. This is great information for more established dahlia gardeners, but not information that I needed now with only three tubers to my name. Good planting companions for dahlias are also in this section, this information was helpful for knowing which plants to place my tubers near.

The next section, Understanding Dahilas, was the information that I needed. This section discussed the history, science and types of dahlias. This information, and there is a lot, helps the grower to understand the plant as a whole. Although, information about growing and propagating is not presented until the end of the book.

There are 200 varieties of dahlias featured in the book and they are organized by color, which is nice. The varieties are presented with clear, beautiful pictures and a simple description.

Lastly, there is information on growing and propagating. I was happy to learn that dahlias are an easy plant to grow! I appreciated the information about handling and planting tubers in general and the tip to start in pots so they do not get devoured by slugs. After (finally) reading this section I feel ready to plant my dahlia tubers.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

HASH(0x90ac4f84) étoiles sur 5 Gorgeous book and fun to read 2 août 2014

Gorgeous book and fun to read. Full disclaimer.. I am not a gardener but this may just put me on the path to becoming one. I picked it up from a display of new books at the local library. My mother and I have pored over its beautiful pictures and enjoyed the accompanying narrative. Unlike a clinical narrative with a scientific approach for the hard core dahlia hounds looking to gain breaking insights into the art; this is a book written by a passionate plant lover himself; and his enthusiasm is contagious. About 10 years ago when I was touring England, I visited Hever castle (the Anne Bolyn castle) in Kent when they were in the midst of a Dahlia exhibit; it was stunning. Later when I was in the Skagit Valley in Washington state I ran into another Dahlia seasonal festival (I am a Fall traveler and these were both Fall exhibits)...impressed by these beautiful flowers but knowing nothing about them.. these images must have been percolating years later when I was at the library and saw this book. I think it would make a wonderful gift for many types of people, including those like me, who don't know how they have an innate attraction to beautiful dahlias. This author loves what he is writing about and reading about his professional background, is obviously qualified professionally as well to write on the subject. I would love to have another such book about hydrangeas and other flower families.

the plant lover's guide to Dahlias is every thing I hoped it would be. It is full of information Planting, caring for, winter protection if you are in northern zones. A big plus is the hundreds of pictures of dahlias and their names so the reader can find the plants they would like. Further there is an index concerning who to write for further info and to order from, plus and where to find Dahlias farms.

HASH(0x90ac678c) étoiles sur 5 I was hoping for more 25 mai 2014

The author loves dahlias all right but I expected more. It was too Britain centered and had too much emphasis on the little-liked collarettes and pompons plus his beloved dark bold colors. It somehow didn't feel represent the best of what dahlias are: B to A sized with good form and subtle colors--both in text and pictures. I'd like to see ratings of cultivars. There was insufficient mention of demon mildew. I was expecting more. After an hour, it's in the pile to donate to the library.
