Description du produit
Two alpacas fighting for the love of a llama; a goat convinced he is really a dog; rattlesnakes and roosters living on the porch and an emu run amok. When a couple and their children leave the suburbs to move to the Texas countryside and start a family farm, they don't expect just how messy - or how muddy - life will become. With her I.T.-guy-turned-farmer husband getting in over his head with big ideas, a rambunctious toddler playing tag with chickens, a special needs child riding "therapy donkeys", and a love for the culture of the South Texas countryside, Fournier spins a funny, enthralling tale of the misadventures, absurdities and joy of life as novice farmers. This book will leave you laughing and yearning to pack your bags and move to the country.

LOVED this book!
14 mars 2018 - Publié sur Amazon.com
I absolutely loved this book. Its funny and entertaining and actually I learned a lot about farming. It kept my interest because it's written as a series of short anecdotes that are quick to read if you only have a few minutes to spare but are also good if you have time to sit down and can really dig into it. But what I really love how it has a much deeper meaning. It goes beyond just the funny stories to be very thought provoking and share some deep ideas about how nature and mindfulness can help people find happiness, healing and peace. The book follows a family who starts a farm from scratch and get a whole bunch of animals. The husband is kind of eccentric and they're trying to figure it all out as they go. They have two kids, one of whom has some challenges, and the mother learns how to be happy even if everything isn't perfect. On the surface, the book is a funny, easy read but it's much deeper than first expected. Ultimately, its about finding acceptance, hope, letting go of expectations and learning to be happy even in the midst of difficulties. It has interesting and absurd moments like the Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball and the way its written in funny anecdotes reminded me of the Caliph's House by Tahir Shah. If you enjoyed either of those, you will like this book. I highly recommend it and I will read it again.
I loved this story

So realistic. I live in San Antonio. I know our "tornado alley". I've raised chickens and dogs. Never knew that guineas eat scorpions. The worst part about this? The very last page. It's a novel. I wanted to meet these people, or at least trade them for an alpaca!

What fun! If you love growing things, raising things, or even just eating things, then this is a great book! Fournier brings, insight, humor, and grace to the description of she and her family's experience in starting a small farm in Texas. Oh, and mud. Join her for the journey. You'll be glad you did.

Hilarious book on the misadventures of farming!

Absolutely loved this book! Hilarious stories about the misadventures of farming in the heat of Texas! I loved how descriptive the author is so it makes it easy to picture yourself right there. You can see how this family fell in love with these wacky animals, my favorite was Quixote. I have never farmed a day in my life but this book was still one I'd recommend for anyone. It's a great one to read with the whole family! Fun summer read!
