5.0 étoiles sur 5 I Didn't Think They Printed Books Like This Any More 3 octobre 2013
Par Stephen Mann - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Where to start singing the praises?

How about the request that anyone who finds an inaccuracy or misprint contact the publisher, with an address for that right next to the "this book is lost, return it to:" page?

Everything from Algebra to Zinc sheeting gauge tables is in this book, which fits in the space from the pad on the base of my thumb to the end of my little finger in length and the width of my hand when closed. Its about as thick as the end joint on my index finger, and it's packed with stuff you'll need at some time or other.

Need to identify a fastener or bolt? Done. Want to know how much dirt is in that pile over there (or conversely, how much of your driveway will be lost to x cubic yards of dirt)? Done. Log tables (remember them)? Done. Want to learn to tie a bowline and a sheepshank? Done. Need the melting point of lead? done. Need to know exactly how many "6 inch wide" boards you'll need for your deck that you sized in real inches? Done.

Time zones? Done. Area codes? Done. Military ranks so you don't look like an arse when you meet a person on active service? Done. Need to know what day your wife's birthday will fall on every year from now 'til next muckspreading? Done.

Take the stuff you used to get in the ends of diaries when we were kids. Add all the stuff you find in the appendices of Big-ass Dictionaries. Add in the actually useful stuff from the old OU Science Data Book. Now pack it all in a pocket-sized book.

This will bring out the inner eight year old in everyone and is about as useful as a Swiss Army Knife welded to a Leatherman Wave.

And it is all organized into sensible sections. If you need something mathy, you'll find it in a "math" section. Need a day/date and you'll be wading into the perpetual calendar. There's sections on carpentry, computers, cars. If you walk into a lamppost while reading, there's a section on first aid, and once properly recovered you'll be able to identify various properties of the post by looking up the metals section.

Six stars.

[EDIT 5/13/16] Good news! There's now a desk-sized version for people who lack pockets, prefer to browse at a desk or are fed up with being laughed at by those who feel that when it comes to reference books, size matters. [/EDIT]

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent resource 10 septembre 2012

Sure, in today's digital age, one could easily and quickly look up facts or information with their phones.. But a signal isn't always available, and only 46% of Americans even *own* a smartphone. I'm among those 54%, and this is so immensely chock-full with facts and information that I probably still won't even need one. Now all that's left is to familiarize myself with the table of contents..

The range of facts in this tiny 860-page book will blow your mind.

Amazing and fun, especially if you're techno, mechanical, or scientific.

You might actually use it. Either way, it's hard to put down. A fun gift for the right person, including possibly yourself.

Keep it in the guest bathroom.

This 4th Edition is expanded (by 12%), updated, and better indexed. But it's still 3.2" x 5.4" x 0.9"

Reviews of the previous Pocket Ref - 3rd Edition are the highest I've seen for anything on amazon. (You can also "Look Inside" the 3rd edition on amazon.)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 All sorts of entertaining useless crap that you "just have to have" 28 novembre 2016

I wanted this after seeing it on "Mythbusters"! There is so much useless crap in there :-). Until I needed to verify the melting point of stainless steel and verify the tensile strength of a chrome moly tube.

But I also know the boiling point of argon, the ICAO three letter designation for Kallita Air and other things that just pique my interest.

If you're the curious type or you do some sort of work that involves arcane knowledge (the speed of air in a 2 inch diameter tube) this is a very useful tome. One complaint is that you might want to have a magnifying glass handy.

If you're a fan of "Mythbusters", especially Adam Savage, this is the "Star Trek Technical Manual". Only people won't laugh at you. Maybe because it will fit in your back pocket (quite a bulge, though).
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Although google might be faster, this book is still pretty interesting. Great to keep in your car. 14 mai 2016

I've been curious about this book for years. One day my curiosity got the best of me and I ordered it. It was interesting to sit and flip through for a while, it is pretty dry because it is pretty much just tables (which is totally what I was expecting) but still something that I found interesting.

The books purpose has mainly been eliminated with the rise of the internet and smart phones. To be honest, if I need to know something like kind of motor oil to use in the cold, I would just google it too. It's much faster than flipping through the book, even though it is well indexed.

I ended up putting this book in my car. I figured the place where this book might come in handy the most is when I am in a place with no cell service or internet, and I figured that the time I would most likely be without service is while driving around in the middle of West Bumblescrew, PA.
