After about 1 month is when I would have problems with the speakers and I was using the Polk Amplifier (they no longer make). After my 4th pair, I gave up and went to the Alpine Type-R. Very impressed with those and I've now been on my only pair for 4 months now and can't be happier. I have them installed on my 2016 Road Glide Ultra. The Type-R also fits in the back rear speaker pods without needing adapters. That is what made me like the Polk MM651, but lack of quality is what made me hate them.
Go with the Alpine Type-R for the Harley front and rear, they fit without adapters in the rear and front (Road Glide Ultra), i'm not sure about the Street Glide. The Alpine are 4 ohm versus the Polk 2.75ohm and the Alpines need alot of power to sound really good....
Right off the bat, I noticed these were much cleaner sounding. The mids and highs were dead on and silky smooth. The low end was tight and defined. It seems like no matter how loud I run them they stay clear and tight. I'm hearing things I never thought was possible on a set of speakers in my motorcycle. Simply amazing! Compared to the J&M set the difference is night and day.
Did I say I'm very happy with these speakers?
For the price you will not find something that sounds this good, period! Heck, I would venture to say that for twice this price you would be lucky.
The bad part is they tweeters can melt and come apart with time. If you look online many have had these issues. The issue is not fixed by any means I don't believe.
All that in mind. For the price. They are really hard to beat and Polk has great warrenty.
Would buy again
Quality 3/5 as far as how long they last
This said. I live in one of the hottest spots in the country in the desert. So many people may not have the same issues with the speakers glue melting
Best power transfer hinges greatly on matching of the speaker’s impedance to the impedance of the amplifier’s output. More importantly, if you have different impedances in the front than in the back, you will have a gross mismatch of power transfer front to back. This is a real issue with getting the sound balanced out in an NA Miata with headrest speakers.
Each headrest has a right and left speaker. The 2 right speakers are connected in parallel to the right rear amplifier output, and the 2 left speakers are connected in parallel to the left rear amplifier output. Most automotive speakers are 4 ohms, so the combined impedance of the speakers is going to be close to 2 ohms. When you read the specifications of most car amplifiers, you find that they tend to transfer more power to 2 ohm speakers than they do to 4 ohm speakers. Since you have a combination of speakers in the headrest that are closer to 2 ohms, and a single set of 4 ohm speakers in the doors, you get allot of power behind your head, and not so much up front. Contrary to popular belief, this has less to do with the rear speakers being closer to your head, and more to do with this mismatch of power transfer.
The result is that you tend to set the fader more toward the front to balance the sound front to back, and the overall power and punch that your stereo can deliver suffers.
The Polk Audio MM651 speaker system has an impedance of 2.7 ohms, and is much more closely matched to that combined impedance you have going on in your headrest. Your fader can now be set much closer to a 50/50 split, bringing back that punch that you have been missing.
Now I’ll talk about some of the other things that make these Polk Audio speakers so amazing. They are a coaxial speaker design, but they have an external crossover network with separate connections to the tweeter and main driver (4 connections to each speaker). In my honest opinion this makes them perform as well as the expensive component systems. They deliver crisp highs, chest pounding lows, while still delivering a full range of mids. Distortion?....I think not. Even at really high volume levels I don’t notice any appreciable distortion.
Installation is a bit tricky with the external crossovers. Not the connections, the routing of the crossover output cables through the door jams and into the doors. Well someone once told me that you’re not really working unless you’re bleeding. That being said, getting everything connected up and working is pretty straight forward.
