We used and abused this saw for a year cleaning up some invasive trees from a 30+ acre property.
This season we probably filled it up with fuel ~100 times.
0) It starts very easy.. Even with mediocre ethanol-containing gas. - Start, make a cut or two, set it down. Sometimes it gets started/restarted 50 times in a day.
1) This saw is small and lightweight, and starts easy, so you can toss it around all day without the saw tiring you out
2) I picked up ~ 3 extra generic chains at Tractor Supply for $12 each. We also drop our chains off at a local hardware store for sharpening, ~$5/ea, so I've probably spent $60 on chain maintenance this year. While I've only thrown the chain about a half dozen times this year, It only takes about 3-5 minutes to reassemble it and/or swap out the chain.
3) The 14" cut is OK great for felling medium trees and prepping stuff for the chipper
If you need to cut something 12" or larger, it'll do the job, but grab a different saw if you've got one handy.
If this saw were to quit tomorrow and I only got this one year of use out of it, I'd buy another one just like it.
We certainly got our money's worth out of this one.
Update: Really needing to clear a small (less than 6 inches) tree that had fallen on my property, I pulled the Poulan off the shelf along with the manual and a fresh gas and oil mixture. Following the manual verbatim I pulled and pulled and pulled. It finally started and after 3 cuts, when I sat down to arrange the log for another cut, It Died! Again following the manual I pulled and pulled. It never refired. I was forced to end the pulling session because I had worn blisters on both hand through work gloves. I surely wish that I had returned this saw within the allowed time frame. Reducing the rating to 1 star.
a little more. Put back together and WOW it started, WOW it idled WOW it cut wood. That is all it was. You would think it would come from the FACTORY with the CORRECT GAP??? Note I only use this for a little pleasure fire wood in the winter.
The unit shipped to me hasn't work right since day 1.
Inspected it after it wouldn't stay running the blade had a bent tooth before it was even used.
Bought a new blade it did not fix the problem. It will not stay running longer then 2-3 min.
On a side note, Poulan is a popular brand that I suggest. The chains are carried in practically every box store and are quite reasonably priced. Poulans customer support is top notch. In the event you need a part they are easily accessible and ship immediately. This particular saw holds up well against higher priced brands of the same size/specifications. Mine has been used daily for months
