Présentation de l'éditeur

An innovative spiritual teacher shows how to use desire and passion as a gateway to realizing our full potential.

What do desire and passion have to do with the spiritual life? They are an essential component of it, according to A. H. Almaas and Karen Johnson. Most spiritual teachings take the position that desire, wanting, and passion are opposed to the spiritual path. The concern is that engaging in desire will take you more into the world, into the mundane, into the physical, and into egoic life. And for most people, that is exactly what happens. We naturally tend to experience wanting in a self-centered way. The Power of Passion explores how to be passionate and to feel a strong wanting without that desire being in conflict with selfless love. It also shows how relationships with others are an important part of the human journey--an opportunity to express oneself authentically and be present with someone else. Through understanding the energy of eros, each of us can learn to be fully real and alive in all our interactions.

In the words of the authors, "Any spiritual work involves the element of love, whether explicitly or implicitly. What we want to explore is how the energy and quality of love explicitly open the door to reality and to our deeper nature. The portal is there for every human being to open; each of us can be fully real and alive in all our interactions. And the erotic, as it is felt and experienced in the body, is a part of that openness, whether it becomes sexual or not. For many reasons, eros has become separated from the pure and the holy, and as a result, it is usually relegated to the domain of the gross and unrefined. But eros is the energy of the divine. As such, it is always divine and pure."

Through guided exercises, the authors invite the reader to connect to the pure energy behind their desire. When we allow ourselves to fully experience our wanting, the authors suggest, and we trust that the wanting itself has the intelligence to reveal the pure energy of desire that underlies it, we get a taste of what it's like to feel love and desire as a unified force. Being in the world in a way that does not separate us from spirit, while also feeling the pleasure of our energy, our erotic nature, our aliveness and love, makes life complete. We want to experience our humanness, the authors say, but we don't want to divide ourselves to do it. We want to know more about both the spiritual and the worldly reality and how the two interrelate, because they are naturally a part of what it means to be human.

Big fan of Ali Hameed's books and the practices and understanding of the Diamond Approach in general, although I don't have the time nor the funds to do more than the one retreat I tried out. So they apparently have an annual retreat that Johnson and Almaas call Quasar retreats that are for the public, especially those involved in other paths who could benefit from the DA's practices and understanding. That's what this book is. One of their public retreats.

I almost gave it three stars because this book is not so much an in depth discussion tantra and eros as it is The Diamond Approach 101 with an emphasis on love, relationships and eros. I was sort of wishing for more in depth discussion on eros as most of what they say about relationships are said elseware in Diamond Approach literature.

What I find great about this book is that Johnson, the other creator of the DA (Faisal was the third), is one of the authors (speakers). Almaas has always seemed like the DA creator and guru because he's the mentally brilliant and sometimes overly hairsplitting author but it was truly Almaas working with Johnson, Maitri, and Faisal who made this approach what it is. It makes him seem less mystified and the DA being more of an organic collaborative creation.

The other great thing is that they outwardly spell out the fundamental practices of the Diamond Approach: Inquiry (simply put and more accessible than the long winded [but still good] previous works on it, the kath meditation (belly focus), and the dyadic inquiry work exactly how I had experienced it on the retreat I went to last year. I would like to note that this peer inquiry was not invented by these teachers, but was created by Claudio Naranjo in the 60's and 70's and he describes his take on it in depth in some of his works. Those involved in the Focusing Method also teach and practice just about the same thing.

I'm happy I have this addition to the DA literature but I kind of wish for another more in depth study of something by Almaas and not just more transcript talks.

Best to read through if you are new to the works of Almaas.

This is a powerful book, written in a clear and accessible style. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in developing depth in their relationships with self and with others, whether or not they consider themselves on a "spiritual path."

This exploration of how our animal nature and our divine nature meet and integrate, the one deepening and enhancing the other, is much needed in our culture, where more often than not anything erotic or sexual is considered separate from, and even detrimental to, our spiritual being. Separating the erotic and the sexual from the spiritual cuts us off from vital energies - and thus from the reality and fullness of who we really are. It greatly limits our openness and vulnerability in relationships, whether with friends or with lovers.

Almas and Johnson show us, instead, how the so-called opposites are two sides of one thing, and how the more open we can be to one, the more we can know the other - thus developing both self-knowledge and capacity for more authentic, life-enhancing relationships. We are shown a number of such so-called opposites, which often appear contradictory, such as how we can enter into absolute unity all while retaining autonomy and uniqueness.

My recommendation is that you do the exercises at the end of each chapter with a friend or lover. These simple exercises turn out to be surprisingly powerful heart, mind, and body openings that can't help but bring new levels of love and appreciation for one another. Enjoy!

The wonderment of this new book is how A.H. Almass and Karen Johnson, two strong unique voices seamlessly alternate chapters that delve into the topic of erotic love, giving the reader a taste of the depth and the light they emanate. The book not only presents a teaching, an expanded view on love, but also invites us, through questions and exercises, to enter and explore realms of experience of love that are possible for you, for me, in our relationships, here and now. And that is one of the book's gifts - it is profound and at the same time easy to grasp and bring home, it brings a view that one could say is radical and at the same relevant in this moment, in this relationship, whatever relationship we are in. The book is not for those who read solely from the mind, but for those who love to include the heart as they read, because it is written to both: it begins by opening the mind and inspiring the heart to explore a major split, often painful, most of us carry between the physical and the spiritual. We are invited to sense into the texture of desire, our desire, our passion for union, our experience of the erotic, our experience of the magnetism of love. We all have erotic experiences, how do we hold them, how do we limit them? "Sexy Angel" (the title of one of the chapters) what a freedom!!! Their first book and hopefully not their last!!

HASH(0x90a6a51c) étoiles sur 5 Now that's passion! 5 octobre 2013
Par Karen Y Rempel - Publié sur
Format: Broché
All of life can be a passionate love affair. When divine eros is flowing freely, we have the power to respond to the people and events of our life and our world with passionate, alive intelligence, and sensitivity.

In their new book, The Power of Divine Eros: The Illuminating Force of Love in Everyday Life, Karen and Hameed invite us in: "Eros is relevant for any human being who is interested in living a full human life, since it is the inherent energy of the zest and sparkle of our life force. Knowing the fundamental nature of our life force is of great importance for the serious spiritual student. And to lead a life of spiritual maturity and full participation in the world, both the knowledge and the embodiment of the nature and energy of life are needed." The book explores divine eros, which includes the zesty, erotic life force of the belly center and the sweet, selfless love of the heart.

Divine eros can be sexual, but it doesn't need to be, and one of the areas of exploration in the book is how our distortions and blocks about sexuality can be a hindrance to allowing the free flow of eros in every area of our life. The book demonstrates this flow. It is immediate and engaging, like being at a retreat with the authors (it is based on a Quasar retreat held in Amsterdam). Just as being at a retreat can impact our soul to experience the qualities we explore there, this book can have a similar effect, igniting the flame of desire to engage in life more fully and passionately.

The Power of Divine Eros has a broad appeal, and is accessible to people who are new to inner work. It describes the method and meaning of many Diamond Approach practices, including the kath meditation, the Om salutation, inquiry, the Hu chant, and dialectical inquiry. For that alone, it is worthwhile for existing DA students--perhaps providing a new and fresh view of our practices--as well as for those new to the work. Karen and Hameed even provide musical selections that help to evoke the qualities of divine eros.

Here, any reader can experience Hameed's sweet, innocent delight, playfulness, and curiosity, and Karen's evocations of the depths of the mystery as it impacts our soul with love and passion. Together, they weave a spell that allows us to taste divine eros, and hunger for more: "For eros to be divine, we must express the embodiment of life and love as one. Having the capacity to be in the world in a way that does not separate us from spirit, while also feeling the pleasure of our energy, our erotic nature, our aliveness and love, makes life complete."

In closing, I would like to add that I think it's about time we heal the split between sexuality and spirituality. Our passion is here for us always, in all aspects of our lives!

I had to read this book with more than my mind - without being present with my heart I would have only been able to partially receive the wisdom of this book. If you want a heartfelt relationship that is more satisfying than anything to date and your willing to give up some preconceived ideas about love, desire and human relationships then consider buying this book. There is a door to experiencing love in unimaginable way and this book helped me open it!
