I am really enjoying this Basic French workbook. Each chapter is set up in a way that you learn the chapter's words and then have some fun with them with great exercises such as sentence and word vocabulary building. I find some concepts more challenging than others and this book provides basic comprehension in a easy to understand manner.

I really enjoy the reading exercises at the end of each chapter that build upon the vocabulary words. It's one thing to write sentences and do some fun exercises, but it gives you a wonderful sense of accomplishment when you can comprehend the written exercises and put to use what you've learned-especially when the written exercises previously looked like jibberish-when it comes together it is manifique.

This is a wonderful basic coarse that builds your knowledge of the French language. This book has a wonderful array of words to practice and learn together with grammar and fun French facts. Out of all the books I could have gotten, I am very happy that I chose this one.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Practical and comprehensive 28 avril 2012

I like the chapter layout of this book and how it really teaches the very basic vocab and grammar etc. My only complaint is that there is no pronunciation guide! I speak Spanish and need extra help to ensure that I'm not transposing the Spanish accent on a French word! Maybe an audio CD would be most effective for this anyway, but a guide would still be helpful since I'm a visual learner. Otherwise it's a great book! I had my friend who has a master's degree in Linguistics look through the book and she also felt that it was quite comprehensive.

if you want to learn the basics of French through writing - especially if you have some knowledge already - this is perhaps the best $13 you can spend.

Bite-sized lessons, simple and straightforward presentation, answer key in the back, affordable and very helpful.

Grab this and a simple dictionary and hit the books!

(note: I recommend starting with this "Basic French", not the other books in the series, e.g. "Basic French Grammar", as this is a nice mix of grammar, vocab, etc., and is at the "basic" level so makes a great starting point / refresher.)

This book was a very good fit for someone like me, who'd enjoyed studying French back in the day, but that day's been a long time gone.

I discovered that I could still read French by picking up my friend's kid's Easy French Reader, but I failed to test out of the most basic level of French study on Duolingo. I had forgotten which nouns were masculine or feminine, how to conjugate verbs and where all the accents belonged, but I still had decent vocabulary recognition. Basically, I was able to consume easy French, but not able to produce it.

Enter this book. At least a third, maybe half the exercises are sentence translations from English into French, which is exactly what I need to practice, i.e. generating non-mangled French, with the ability to immediately check my answers.

In the Kindle version, as of this review, most of the exercises link directly to their answers, and the answer links right back to the question (tap the exercise number); this is true for about 2/3 of the exercises, but not for the ones formatted in columns (there seem to be more of those toward the beginning). This makes the book great for quizzing yourself.

The place where this book loses its star also has to do with the Kindle version. All multi-column content , which includes vocabulary lists, verb tables, and 1/3 of the exercises, are static images, not flowing text. Depending on the device and font size, these images can be either too small to read, or too big and break the Kindle formatting. It's not a show-stopper, but it can be a nuisance, particularly all the exercises which don't link directly to their answers also fall into this set.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Beginner Book 7 octobre 2012

If you are the kind of person who learns by practice, you are going to love this book. The format of the book is great & it covers all the basics you need to learn French.Every chapter is theme based and contains vocabulary related to that particular topic (ex. food, grocery, actions, etc). It then has exercises based on that topic and includes grammar. Every subsequent chapter builds upon the subject from previous chapters & thus you will not forget any vocab or grammar rules. I highly recommend this book to beginner francophiles.
