A lire absolument!

The Pretender Lives!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Saving Luke is a MUST Read 28 mai 2014

I was hooked on the 90's TV Show "The Pretender" from the very first episode. I didn't know much about the program at its inception other than my all-time favorite actor, Michael T. Weiss, had the male lead. At the time, that's really all I cared about. Michael was back on TV and it didn't matter if the show was good or bad I was gonna watch it just to see him, but it quickly turned into more than that for me.

Jarod's search for his family, identity and desire to help others touched me in a way no other story ever has before, and it really hit home. My mother always taught me life wasn't worth living if you couldn't help someone. It didn't matter that his captors were always on his heels attempting to return him to the Centre, if he knew someone had escaped justice and wronged another, he made every effort to correct it.

Watching Jarod, who'd been held captive for thirty years, experience the small joys in life for the very first time was simply magical; he was like a kid in a candy store. Michael brought Jarod to life in such a way that made you feel his pain, his loss and his joy, and he made you believe anything was possible as long as the Pretender was on the job.

I was compelled to follow Jarod's journey every week, wondering who he would help next, would he be captured and returned to the Centre, but most of all if he would find his family. Then the rug was pulled out from under me and NBC, in their infinite wisdom, canceled the best show ever on TV after four incredible seasons.

Fast Forward thirteen years, and the creators of the 90's cult classic have brought it back in a BIG way in novel form. The first novel, "The Pretender: Rebirth," was a fantastic read, and it was such a joy to finally have "The Pretender" back in my life again.

The second novel, "The Pretender: Saving Luke" is finally here and what a roller coaster ride it is! Jarod is in fine form as he aids the unfortunate souls he encounters as well as making the bad guys pay along his journey to discovering the whereabouts of a young boy (Luke) who he's desperately trying to locate and rescue from a terrorist before time runs out. From brain surgery to free-falling 6000 feet to the roof of a fast-moving train, Jarod proves over and over again if you put your mind to something you can accomplish anything.

"Saving Luke" is a well-written, fast-paced and fantastic read that doesn't disappoint! I highly recommend it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Must Read For All Pretender Fans! 4 juin 2014

I was so happy when the creators of The Pretender decided to continue their storytelling in book form. Rebirth (first book in the series) was a great read, but Saving Luke is even better. It's very fast-paced and impossible to put down once you start reading. The characters we have come to know and love leap off the page and being able to spend time with them again is a most welcome delight. Steven and Craig are great storytellers and they know these characters inside and out and they know what the fans want from them ~ and boy do they deliver! There are new insights to be gleaned and a big reveal name-wise (although not the one I long for. I know it will come eventually. Note to Steve and Craig: We'll still call her Miss Parker even if we know her first name!). I highly recommend Saving Luke and can't wait to see where Jarod, Miss Parker and the rest of the gang go next!

Saving Luke is the perfect follow up to The Pretender creators first novel Rebirth. With it's vivid imagery and intelligent dialogue this novel sucked me I to a world that I did not want to leave. Jarod, Sydney and Miss. Parker came to life page after page, reminding this long time fan exactly why they have never left my heart. Overall, I could not put this novel down. If it wasn't for 7am meetings I would have read it throughout the night. It is that great. Well done! All I can say is I want more!!!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Concluding the Rebirth 14 mai 2014

The Pretender returned in 2013 with the series reboot of Rebirth. This second installment picks up where the last book left off and works its way through a fast paced journey, namely surrounding Jarod's quest to save Luke. The book is a real page turner and you will find yourself rushing through it as Jarod rushes through each obstacle to get closer to his goal. The odds and time are against Jarod, and he will have to use his Pretender skills in new ways if he is to be successful. Reading the first book is essential to understanding the back story about Jarod, Miss Parker, Sydney, Luke, and the various supporting characters.

This is a very different story than what we've seen on TV. When compared to the first book it doesn't mimic an episode from the show even though it is a continuation of the unresolved plot points from Rebirth. Veteran fans of the show will pick up on a lot of references or themes that developed in the show in its first two seasons. In some ways, it feels like a lot of big moment discoveries Jarod encounters all take place in this book. Some of the Centre characters even seem to have developed very quickly. In some ways, some of those experiences felt a little rushed, but I doubt the creators plan to write 80+ books to match the amount of episodes, so some things feel that way to me as a veteran of the series but may not to newcomers.

The characters of The Centre are expanded upon in this installment. We learn more about Sydney, Miss Parker, the unibrowed Cornelius, and especially Daphne. A question from the TV series concerned character's first or last names, given most only had one or the other. There are some mysteries and attempts to reveal some of these in the book, which is rather fitting for veteran fans of the show who have been curious about those details. Most of the Centre subplot revolves around questions of Miss Parker's mother and the pain Miss Parker holds in her heart. Sydney seems to be stuck in the middle and his loyalties will be tested. Daphne and the unibrow spar throughout in an attempt to gain favoritism with Miss Parker. There are a couple of character surprises to be found too.

Jarod's character isn't developed as much as it was in the first novel in my opinion. However, we do see a darker and more serious side to Jarod, much in the way he would bring about the ironic vengeance to the weekly foe in the TV show, usually as a means of both getting them to confess to their crime as well as ensure they will never cause trouble again. I think some of the lighter moments of Jarod's character in the show were lacking, though, given the serious quest he was on there wasn't much time for his innocent side to show like it did in the first book.

The most off-putting thing in the novels for me has been the more mature tone. Both in language and some themes or imagery. The second book, perhaps a bit more so than the first, is definitely not a book for the younger audiences. That disappoints me to a degree, mostly because it deviates from the nature of the show and how I enjoyed it as a teen. It paints a more realistic picture perhaps of the darkness in people's hearts or the scars and agony they carry with them, but it also is something that could be handled differently and appeal to a larger audience.

In the end, the book resolves a lot left open from Rebirth. It does not resolve or bring about any answers for long time fans of the TV show. However, the canvas is set to take us deeper into the Pretender world now that Jarod has been reintroduced to the masses. Where the creators go from here I don't know, but I hope sooner rather than later we pick up where we left off with Island of the Haunted. If a third book is to be written, I really hope it will answer some questions from the past while bring up new ones for the future.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Page turning, thought provoking! 21 mai 2014
Par Colby - Publié sur Amazon.com

While I am fairly new to The Pretender, Rebirth and now, Saving Luke have captured my imagination and heart. While reading the book, the characters came alive and I was taken even deeper into the minds of Jarod and Miss Parker in a way that I had been anxiously awaiting after reading Rebirth. The characters not only take life on these pages but the authors also come into their own, delivering more complete, dynamic characters and plot twists in what is truly a page turner. In Saving Luke, the Pretender transforms from an TV series into a page turning novel series that I would recommend to all - new to the Pretender or die-hard fans!
