5.0 étoiles sur 5 Love it like you used to.... 22 octobre 2011

I must admit, even after hearing "Keep You" for months, I was hesitant to buy this album. The track almost sounded too good to be true. However, after one listen, you will realize that you've only scratched the surface. The ultra-slick production of this album will make it a guilt-free daily listener. While the new M83. album is a sweeping and epic event, "Rapprocher" is that dirty interruption that finishes the night off. Elizabeth Harper has this vocal-magnetism thing going on....you should definitely check it out.

I just love this gal's voice and the overall mood this album provides. She is always singing with this come-hither type tone and her ability to flit around between a few registers is sooo sleek! The production value is great too. Chunky 80s type synths, without sounding like an 80s record. Class Actress is a real class act!

Wow. I am thoroughly impressed with this release. From top to bottom this album offers sleek well-produced electronic pop that perfectly complements Elizabeth Harper's voice. This album is hook-heavy pop and loaded with sexy jams that will have you bobbing your head before you know it. I would liken Class Actress to a "female depeche mode" and so far this is sounding like her "violator". Highly recommended.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 an exhilarating record 18 octobre 2011

through the middle of october the go! team's 'rolling blackout' remained unchallenged in my completely irrelevant 'favorite album of the year' contest. that was, of course, until 'rapproacher' made its way to my itunes and now that i've listened to the album front-to-back three dozen times now [no exaggeration there], it's a neck-and-neck race to the end of december and it's looking like a photo finish [unless the new marina & diamonds album drops before the end of the year. if so, all bets are off].

racing analogies aside, 'rapproacher' is an incredibly sleek, well-produced, and downright sexy album that's got more hooks than a tacklebox. that elizabeth harper's voice is the real star shouldn't come as any surprise. anyone following her since 'journal of ardency' knows she's got incredible range, sounds completely effortless in her breathy delivery, and transitions to her falsetto with absolute ease. the transition is most effective on the lead track, 'keep you,' in which she essentially creates her own call-and-response that sends shivers down the spine. it's a neat and very effective trick. and while many of the songs keep the traditional verse/bridge/chorus structure, she manages to throw in a few curveballs like the teasing the chorus with the extended bridge on 'love me like you used to' [another standout track]. that sent me into a tizzy the first time i heard it. other standout tracks for me include 'hangin' on,' 'weekend,' and 'limousine.' [though it must be noted there's not a single bad, or even questionable, moment on the album. it's an A+ effort from top to bottom.]

in a day when the reemergence of synthpop is a largely hit-and-miss affair [not to mention souless], 'rapproacher' is the kind of album that revels in style, class, glam and sophistication. it manages to keep its emotional integrity while forcing you on the dance floor. it begs repeated listens and with each ms. harper sinks her glittery fangs deeper and deeper in your jugular. you've been warned.

a stellar debut by any account.
