Surprisingly, it is possible to learn how to read hieroglyphs without being a specialist or study the subject for years! This book is the proof you can do it! It contains a very accessible and clever approach that let you learn without suffering much. It contains many exercises that will make you sure you understood the related chapter. Of course, that means you have to work on it, but it is a pleasure.
Egyptians had a complex and clever way to write, but as you might realise soon, it was not practical for hand writing at all! Nevertheless, if you are interested in hieroglyphs, this book is definitely worth its price. You will never go to the museum with same eye after having read it!

Well, what title should I give for a book on Egyptian hieroglyphs?
Actually, the information blurb from the Library Journal linked to the book's entry here states: 'Reference collections desiring more complete coverage will want Alan Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar (1957. 3d ed.) despite some obsolescence in the treatment of the verbal system.'
I actually learned hieroglyphs using that text at the University of London in the 1980s. But I have assembled a collection of more accessible books on how to learn hieroglyphs as refreshers and for sharing. I have four texts, and this was the first of the lot.
If you are truly interested in learning Egyptian hieroglyphs for an upcoming trip to Egypt or to visit a museum with a collection (I amazed a friend once by being able to read an inscription at the museum; I confessed that of the hundreds of 'paragraphs' of hieroglyphs in the collection, that that was one of only two I could decipher without my notebook), Collier and Manley's 'How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs' is a good choice for learning.
It begins with a basic description of the way in which hieroglyphs are used (some signs are words, but actually very few, and others are sound-meaning symbols). Collier and Manley introduce a transliteration system to ease your way into pronunciation (and pronunciation is very sketchy, given the fact there are no recordings from ancient Egypt). Symbols can vary occasionally for sound, meaning, and determinative value.
The pattern of hieroglyphs is also variable. Generally, you always want to 'read into the face', i.e., the picto-glyphs will be facing the direction from which to start -- more often right to left than left to right, and columns go top to bottom.

Certainement la meilleure méthode pour s'initier à la lecture des hiéroglyphes. Excellent travail, simple comme savent le faire les anglais, limpide à vous faire passer pour un génie de l'épigraphie.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good book, but a bit complicated 6 décembre 2008

I find this to be an excellent and helpful guide to translating hieroglyphics, but the methods used are a little bit complicated and sometimes tough to follow. I still recommend it, however.

It is very systematic in it's approach to teaching the reader, as it first teaches one letter symbols (the alphabet), then two, and so on and so forth. Also, at the end of each section, it has a small translation that comes from an actual site in Egypt, that focuses on what the reader learned in the chapter. In this aspect, the book is very helpful and an excellent guide to the ancient written language of the Egyptians.

It does, however, go into a lot of detail when discussing each topic, and it becomes difficult to follow at some points in the book. This is the lone setback of this book. It is very systematic and methodical, but it does become rather complicated. Even so, if you are ready to get started and have a strong desire to learn hieroglyphics, then this is the book for you.

It has some complicated wording, and thus I recommended it to those who have a higher vocabulary, but no matter what your age, if you want a good, helpful resource, then don't let me stop you.

This may sound like long-winded criticism, but I am just trying to help you get a good feel for what this book is like, because I, myself, hate it when I purchase a book and then it comes, and is not what I thought it was. Overall, though, I really like the book and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in hieroglyphics.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great for a Fast Study and Enhances Egypt Tours 14 mars 2008
Par Michael J. Cashen - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is a great book if you're going on a tour of Egypt and want to learn a little about hieroglyphics so you won't be completely illiterate while exploring the tombs - your guide on any official tour should be able to read them, but won't have time to explain everything. You won't get bogged down for months - it's geared for words and phrases you are likely to find in tombs.

I studied the first three chapters then scanned and combined the tables in the back of the book into a two-sided, one-page cheat sheet to carry with me into the tombs. It made my trip much more enjoyable and people on our tour were always asking me what it said next to an interesting drawing - I could usually get at least the gist of it: "He's making an offering of beer and other things to a god...", etc.

A great example is when our tour was at Luxor, in the Temple of Karnak, and I noticed that on many of those large pillars (it's a "forest" of pillars without a roof) the hieroglyphics for "life" (the ankh) and "give" (a tiny triangle in an isosceles triangle) were repeated over and over at ever higher places as you walked around the pillar. The temple was dedicated to the god Amun Re. Suddenly, I realized the meaning: while following those words, your eyes were being lifted to Amun Re, the Sun god, who "gave life" - it was as if someone from over 3000 years ago suddenly reached out and talked to me.

I love this book! It absolutely is for the "true beginner" and has plenty of exercises, well thought out chapters and a ton of information in the many appendixes (including a small dictionary, hieroglyphic sign lists and small descriptions). I'd recommend this book to ANYONE who is looking to improve on their Hieroglyphic knowledge or who would like to learn even a little bit about them!

This book is just really an amazing read. One is prompted to really get out a sketch pad and doodle the likeness of each character. After some time of rhetoricical practice, the familiarity increases which challenges one to attempt reading more complex combinations of characters. If you ever wanted to get started, this book is a great place to begin!
