Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey is an ambitious journey, avoiding the beaten track and tourist hot-spots, in search of the authentic food of Southeast Asia. Biographie de l'auteur

Rick Stein is a well-loved and respected chef, TV presenter and author who has produced an array of award-winning books and television series, including Rick Stein's Seafood, Seafood Lover's Guide, Taste of the Sea, Food Heroes, French Odyssey, Mediterranean Escapes and most recently Coast to Coast. All of his books and programmes show a commitment to good-quality produce, sustainable fishing and good husbandry.

Rick owns four restaurants, a delicatessen, a patisserie, a seafood cookery school and forty guest bedrooms in the small fishing port of Padstow, Cornwall. In 2003, Rick was awarded an OBE for services to West Country Tourism. He divides his time between Padstow and Australia, which he regards as his second home.

I love this new addition to my Rick Stein collection, it's crammed with delicious recipes and very tempting photographs. Rick has a great patter and will keep you entertained with his snippets from his travels and adventures. I found that some of the ingredients are a little awkward to source, I just have to travel into Atlanta. Many of these recipes are healthy so you can't go wrong with this purchase. Rick is very popular in my homeland and I'm hoping to purchase the DVD from this eastern series which I missed in the UK. I purchased my copy from amazon.co.uk, with a couple of other books ordered the overseas shipping costs and cheaper UK book price worked out better.

This cookbook was recommended to me by my brother, who, having spent a fair bit of time in Thailand was amazed to find a green chicken curry that actually tasted like a genuine Thai offering.

Stein has Anglicised the recipes, not to alter the flavour, but to use ingredients that can be found easily in the west, by visiting your local asian food store. But do not fear, the taste remains true to the original. You won't find any recipes that tell you to buy a curry paste and use two tablespoons. The recipe for all the pastes are found in the back of the book. The best thing about that, is that I can adjust the amount of heat to suit.

I've just loaned it to a friend, who is equally impressed, and now ordering her copy.

It also cost half as much here as it does off the shelf in Australia.

Great Read, lovely pictures. One of the best cook books around, we bought it mainly for the Bengali dishes. If you get the all the 'bits' and take the time to sample the menu, so to speak, the results are very tastey! While one or two of the dishes can be done slightly differently I say each to their own taste. If wish to try before you buy, then there are some of the recipes out there on the internet, so you can judge for yourself. You really cannot go wrong. Some reviewers have given the book one and two star ratings, on other web sites, and called the book complicated - all rather sad if you ask me, as the book could not be clearer. This is one book you keep in the Kitchen and not the bookshelf.

4/11 - I've been 'reading' this for nearly 3 months now, but it's not a hard read, it's really interesting and appetite building and there are plenty of pictures. It's so appetite building, in fact, that I've been writing down most of the recipes in a work book of my own (the photocopier died recently, otherwise this process would go much faster). I like Stein's style of writing a page or two of introduction at the beginning of each chapter (each chapter details a different country that he visited on his Far Eastern Odyssey show), tying the book to the tv show of the same name by talking about the filming of the show, his crew and why he loved the specific country of that chapter etc. I've seen the show as well and I think that they complement each other - in the book you get the proper ingredient amounts and method, on the show you get to SEE how the recipe is cooked, maybe learn a new process while watching him do it.

great book with a lot of diversity due to the different countries that are covered... highly recommended but be aware that recipes sometimes take more effort than you would guess (especially spice pastes take quite a bit of time to source and make).
