HASH(0x9693df3c) étoiles sur 5 Essential Guide to the Rijksmuseum 3 décembre 2014

If you visit Amsterdam you must go to the Rijksmuseum. If you enjoy art and history you will love the Rijksmuseum. The museum contains the world’s foremost collection of Dutch Masters and giants of the art world like Rembrandt and Van Gogh. There are also numerous works of art that depict the Golden Age of Dutch history during a time when The Netherlands was one of the richest and most advanced countries in the world.
Over the last 10 years I have visited the Rijksmuseum on three separate occasions and I wish I had this book with me during those visits.
The last times I visited the Rijksmuseum I used the audio program and booklet provided by the museum. Although I learned a lot from the standard museum materials I found them too academic and too dry. What I really liked about “The New Rijksmuseum” by Marko Kassenaar is that the author provides the essential highlights of the important pieces in a way that is easy to understand. Also I really enjoyed the little tidbits of cultural information and interesting facts that are often missing in most guides but are included in so many of the descriptions in this book.
The last time I was at the Rijksmuseum a few years ago they were renovating some of the major sections. Now I have this essential guide so I can learn about all the important highlights right from my Kindle app!

This is a beautiful book with pictures from the Netherlands' National Museum. It depicts cathedral-like buildings and houses such Dutch masters as Rembrandt and Vermeer. This was a country with rulers who spent money on art and science. Also depicted, are collections of silverware, furniture, earthenware and glass. There is a vast number of beautiful pictures and a great description of each picture and item...I found myself glued to the pages, enjoying this culture of the arts, learning a lot of history along the way. I particularly enjoyed Rembrandt's "Jewish Bride" and found the depiction of "The Holy Family" interesting; painting included Mary's parents, sisters and brothers, as well as Joseph's family.

This informative book takes the reader on a visually stunning walk through history. The explanations of the works, paintings , sculpture, products of everyday life, and even an airplane are vivid and add detail to the works themselves. Every piece illustrated is revealed not just in pictures but with explanation in concise wording that explains not just the surface beauty but also the symbolism that lies beneath.

If I have any complaint, it would be that I wished the illustrations be larger. I understand though that this is constrained as result of it being an e-book. The book is well worth a look, and if I ever make it to Amsterdam, the New Rijksmuseum will be a major go to location.

I enjoyed "Van Gogh Today" so much that I decided to check out this book as well. The books covers 17th to 20th century art and includes the best of Rembrandt and other Dutch masters. I happen to have a reproduction of "Windmill at Wijk", an intriguing painting and one of my favorites. You'll find lots of photos in this book. Another great book and gift idea for the Holidays!

If you ever visit Amsterdam, be sure to take a tour of this amazing museum.

This book is mainly comprised of detailed descriptions of the art in the museum (mostly paintings). I like it how the author actually explains what is going on inside the painting, and provides a historic background to highlight the rich history and culture of each artwork. Of course, pictures are included as well. I recommend reading this book before planning a trip to the Rijksmuseum or bringing a copy of this book so you will understand the significance of the artwork.
