HASH(0x931c4570) étoiles sur 5 Truly wild metal 21 octobre 2003
Par Brian Fischer-Giffin - Publié sur
Format: CD
Raven's "Rock Until You Drop" is quite simply a masterpiece of early British heavy metal. While they became even less than a shadow of their former selves a few years later, here they were years ahead of their time. The energetic breakneck pace and exuberence on display throughout this recording wasn't to be replicated until the likes of Metallica and Slayer began to emerge over two years after this was released. This album's mayhemic sleeve art is a good representation of the music inside. At this point of their career, Raven was playing outrageously wild heavy metal. John Gallagher wails until he is almost out of breath, brother Mark throttles his guitar like a psycho and Wacko... Well, Wacko is just whacko! Incredibly however, there is an amazing sense of control to the pandemonium on display, and some wonderfully structured original songs along with the Sweet covers that Raven turn into a blitzkrieg. At the pinnacle however is 'Tyrant of the Airways', a complex pseudo-thrash mini-epic that predates anything on Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" by a good two years! If you only ever buy one NWOBHM album, make it this one.

HASH(0x932a6504) étoiles sur 5 The first Speed/Thrash Metal album 16 mars 2008

Format: CD
When it comes to first Speed/Thrash Metal albums, people usually start with Metallica's "Kill 'em All" (1983), or at best, either Jaguar's "Power Games" (1983) or Exciter's "Heavy Metal Maniac" (1983) which were both on the streets before Metallica. If you want to try your luck, you might put your bets on Anvil's classic "Metal On Metal" (1982), but it's actually Power Metal.

The truth? Well, Raven crashed, banged and walloped already in 1981 with their debut LP "Rock Until You Drop". Let the boys have the honour they deserve, this is the first Speed/Thrash Metal album ever!

Raven are commonly considered as a New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band. Sure they are that too, but their form of music in "Rock Until You Drop" and its' follow-up album "Wiped Out" (1982) is pure Speed/Thrash.

If you want a piece of fast, powerful, hilarious, totally OTT Metal with awesome songwriting, look no further. Cool expanded edition too. Raven did it first.

HASH(0x935c1774) étoiles sur 5 definite ROCK element!! 7 janvier 2005

i have been a "metalhead" for 20 plus years, and missed raven the first time around, which is a shame as these guys where GREAT!!as other reviewers have noted, they came out more or less during the NWOBHM of the early 80's and blow most of those bands AWAY!i would describe raven as a proto-thrash band, but with a fun-loving ROCK element(albeit very hard/heavy rock).

in my opinion, this stuff really holds up well!!fast tempo, catchy, heavy(but not death metal),over the top falsetto wailings, could do a lot worse!!First three albums are essential for the metal purist/historian.long live RAVEN!!

Before the Metalliclones began their bay-area thrashing, rock's original Gallagher brothers (confusion with a band like Oasis might net you a black eye) were absolutely stirring things up across the water. Most metalheads who want to try Raven will be doing so after having been introduced to the style by later bands, and as such, it's useful to talk about Raven in terms of later acts. The closest approximation would be some amalgam of Dave Mustaine and Axl Rose - think "Peace Sells" meets "It's So Easy," add a healthy dose of humor, and you'll have "Lambs to the Slaughter." Raven's unpretentious brand of "athletic rock" (their term) is a welcome burst of musical yang, particularly in light of the current "nu"-metal's seeming fixation on the depressing plight of existence. Raven offers a blood-curdling motorcycle ride through early metal; the song titles and the album cover here are perfect guides to the music within. For what it tries to be, this album achieves its goal as perfectly as is possible.

It's more then twenty year's ago since I bought the first pressing of this unique album. And after all these year's and after listening to thousands of other rocksongs, I must admit a simple fact: this is the best heavy metal album ever made. Never heard so much controlled power, sheer energy, tremendous speed, enthusiasm, lust for life, musical skills and creativeness on one album. Every song is a monument on it's own. The Gallagher brothers and Rob Hunter really set a example which no band in rock history could ever follow. Not even Raven's second and third album - although very good - are in the same league as Rock until you drop. A simple title for a truly excellent, or even better: awesome record. If you ever have a difficult task to fulfill in life, listen to this album and you'll feel invincible. I know, I played this album over and over and over and over again.
