Présentation de l'éditeur

This acclaimed sports biography, researched and written by the experienced and multilingual tennis writer Chris Bowers, considers who Federer is as a person and what place he will occupy in tennis and sporting history. Roger Federer is a legend not only in the world of tennis but also in the wider sporting arena. With a record-breaking tally of 16 Grand Slam titles to his name, he shows no sign of slowing down and in 2010 added another Australian Open win to his collection, as well as taking the trophy in the end-of-season ATP World Wide Tour Finals in London. This authoritative and affectionate biography traces the rise of Federer, from his first tentative strokes with a tennis racket to how he dealt with being sent away to a training academy where he struggled to communicate in a French-speaking part of Switzerland; and how he handled the sudden death of his first real coach and mentor. It looks at his development as a sportsman and how he has matured into a family man with his marriage to Mirka Vavrinec and the birth of their twin girls. It also examines how Roger bounced back from arguably one of the most challenging periods of his career as, following a serious illness and a dip in form, his run of successive Wimbledon championship wins was ended and he was toppled from the number one spot by his long-time rival Rafael Nadal. In characteristic style, Federer silenced his critics by winning the French Open title for the first time, reclaiming his Wimbledon crown and ending 2009 at the number one position for the fifth time.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Overview of Perhaps the Greatest Tennis Player to Date 5 septembre 2011

I thouroughly enjoyed this biography of Federer. The author does an excellent job of writing a balanced account of Federer with relationship to his personal life; tennis exploits; and contribution to others with his generosity. Overall it is a very pleasant account of Federer that will be a welcome addition to any tennis fanatics library. I learned a lot about tennis, and the person and work ethic of Federer. Now I am an even bigger fan of perhaps the "greatest" male tennis player of all time.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Much better than the average rating suggests 12 janvier 2012

The 2-star review pulls down the average star rating of this book more than it deserves, and frankly I can't imagine what the reviewer might mean by it being "not a real biography". It's an excellently-written book, and is well-paced without erring either on the side of being too dramatic or too dull. If you want high drama, you won't get it here, but if you want good solid research and plenty of detail, this is definitely worth purchasing.

The author explains in his introduction that since Federer has not, at this stage, felt sufficiently ready to write his autobiography, this one is "unauthorised" - or, as Bowers prefers to call it, "independent". Fair enough. But it is in no way antagonistic or secretive, since other members of the Federer family and many of Federer's close friends and associates did contribute.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book, and I can't think of anything that would have made it better, hence the 5-star rating.

Dear Chris:

I don't know whether you will ever come across this entry, however I would like to make a note that there is an error in your book, "Roger Federer: The Greatest". You reference that Roger put together Hit for Haiti at the Australian Open. He did put together "Rally for Relief" at the Australian Open, but he put together "Hit for Haiti" at the Masters Series event in Indian Wells, California. I know because I was there. Nadal and Agassi were playing doubles against Federer and Sampras. Don't you remember when Agassi pulled out his pockets to imply that Sampras was "cheap" and Sampras hit a serve, at a very fast speed, that almost hit Agassi in the head. Of course, Agassi later made amends to Sampras. It was a very "tense" moment to say the least. (Just think, an entire stadium of people watching). Poor Nadal didn't know what was going on and Federer was trying as best he could to keep the situation on the "light" side. It was supposed to be all in fun. Agassi may have gone too far, but the truth hurts.

I enjoyed reading the book very much. I especially appreciated learning about Federer's early years and his association with the Australian Coach, Peter Carter who had such an important impression on Roger. Roger had a really hard year. But like Roger, it seems he is spicing it up. A new baby, a new coach and a new stick.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Roger with one of his loyal fans. We share the Birthdate August 8th. Once a Leo, always a Leo.

Here's to another great year with Roger, Rafa, Djokovic, Murray and del Potro and the dark horse(s).

Long live the "King of the Court".
