Présentation de l'éditeur

The Rolling Stones' story has been written numerous times throughout the decades. "Stones Gear" is also the story of the "Rolling Stones", but with a new twist: their history as told through what instruments were used during their recording sessions and tour dates. This book covers not only the group's personal background, but also every tour and studio session from its inception in 1962 to date, with intense documentation and detail regarding what instruments were used during these periods. Every song recorded by the band, including all demos and outtakes, is also documented, with input from people who were involved with the band throughout their career. The information and data used in the book was culled from several thousand periodicals, as well as hundreds of interviews conducted by the authors. The authors also carefully scrutinized thousands of photographs as well as thousands of hours of televised performances, interviews, and tour footage to present this factual document. It is illustrated with hundreds of photographs and images, many of which have never been published. Whether you are a musician, a fan of the group, or just the casual reader, you will learn many new facts concerning the band throughout its monumental 50-year existence.

Magnifique ouvrage!

It was very easy for me to like this as I was schooled in Liverpool in the 60s when the Stones and the Beatles were in their infancy. That said, I have read many a book about both, most of which have been well written and informative - but written by one guy. What really sets this book apart is the fact that there is a huge contribution from other artists and general hangers-on who witnessed the Stones from those early days. It is a fascinating book which is very easy to read. Whilst aficionados of the gear they used and use now is covered in some depth with great photographs, anyone even vaguely interested how the Stones rose from itinerant wannabe musicians to the best rock and roll band in the world will love this. This is a serious piece of work which is a great read and a must- have for Stones fans.

Like so many Stones fans, I have been waiting patiently for a few years for this to be released. I was beginning to think it was never going to happen, but now that the day has finally come and it has arrived on my doorstep, I can say that it was worth the wait.

Clocking in at almost 700 pages, this beautiful hardback is HEAVY, with exceptional paper quality. Which is especially a good thing, because the pictures in this book are printed with such detail and clarity. All the famous instruments (Micawber, Gloria, etc.) get multiple shots, so you can see all the little grooves, finishes, and the like that give each instrument its character. The images are mostly shown by themselves and "in action" (meaning being played by The Stones), which gives great context.

If that would be all there is, I'd be satisfied, but there is substantial text that explains the gear. Whether it be when and where each Stone received his instrument or what adjustments have been made from stock or traditional settings (pickups, tuners, etc.), it's all there. This is THE REFERENCE you'll need if you are a musician and Stones fan. I've never seen anything like it.

Even if you don't play or are very musical yourself, you'll still want this book. This is the best Stones book I have had the pleasure of owning (with maybe the exception of Keith's book. Maybe.). So many music books about The Rolling Stones, or any band, don't really go into detail about the one thing that made us fans in the first place: the music. This book makes up for all that. This holy grail is currently more than $20 off from the MSRP, but even at the original $60, it's worth it.

If you're on the fence, get this now. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy it as much as I am! Finally, the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band gets the book they deserve.

HASH(0x99840c3c) étoiles sur 5 Great Book to have for any Band lover 28 mars 2014
Par John Weant - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is one of the best books of it's kind that anyone interested in a band's history could have. Having been in a few bands over the years, it reminded me of instrument, and other equipment issues we have had, and how they were resolved, sometime in the most unconventional ways. The Rolling Stones Gear book places the super-band in a more familiar light, and brings their superstar status down to earth for us regulars. Perhaps there are opportunities we have missed out on because our own gear did not come together for us? There are many examples in the book of good lesson learned in the life of a super-band.

My heart sank every time I received an email from Amazon saying that this had been delayed. But today, finally, it arrived. That my expectations have been exceeded is an understatement. This book is fantastic. The pictures alone are worth the price, many photos of the Stones I've never seen before, and what seem like acres of photos of musical instruments. Just flipping through the book I have learned about, for example, Keith's rare white Gibson ES 345, a guitar I'd never heard of. The detail and the research are phenomenal. A must-have purchase for any Stones fan or anyone interested in rock instrumentation.

Purchased this for my son, who is not only a Stones fan, but also a musician. As much as he loves the band and their music, he is equally obsessed with the history of their use of certain instruments. I was amazed to find a book that addressed both of these things, let alone so beautifully. This is a large, hardcover, quality-made book. It has a nice balance of photos (and other graphics) and interesting, well-written copy. For the casual Stones fan, it may be an information overload (because as visually attractive as it is, there is A LOT of information in the book), but for a fan who knows which instrument with band member played on which song, or cares to, this book is a true gift.
