5.0 étoiles sur 5 Seductive Roussel-cum-Debussy East Indian Exoticism (but MP3 buyers beware the track labeling!) 15 août 2013

This lovely Debussy-like work is very different from the scores by which the composer is usually known (i.e., the sophisticated Stravinskian violence of the last two symphonies). It was composed in 1910-11 under the influence of his visits to India. The last movement is a setting of an extravagant pantheistic poem by Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi (where the orchestra is joined by contralto, tenor and baritone soloists and chorus). If one enjoys hedonistic late impressionism, this score will be a welcome addition to that area of one's shelves.

I downloaded only the MP3's because I didn't want the suite from "The Spider's Feast," so I can't write about the booklet notes or the translation of the text (the score can be downloaded from PETRUCCI). However, when I got into the ordering process, I discovered that one is forced to download the entire album. Luckily, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because the tracks are out of order and incorrectly titled. Track 1 is indeed the first movement of "Evocations", but track 2 is the third movement, and track 4 is the second. Further, the suite from "The Spider's Feast" is track 3.

The present recording dates from 1978, but the sound is very good--I didn't hear any tape hiss. There is a competing digital recording on EMI, but I don't think the singers could be a great deal better. True, Nicolai Gedda is the tenor, but it's Gedda at the end of his career. Who knows, he might be marvelous, but it's a very short part anyway. Tenor Zdenìk Švehla is perfectly fine, and the other two solo singers are even better. The chorus sings with luscious youthful tone, and the Czech Philharmonic plays with the beautiful sound and technical mastery one has come to expect from them...and the MP3's are certainly cheaper.
