Le mélange entre les Clash et les Chieftains ? Possible, les Pogues l’ont fait !

C’est le pari que les Pogues ont gagné avec cet album qui a cartonné en 1985 et qui reste sans doute leur meilleur : marier l’énergie du punk rock dont est issu le chanteur à la gouaille légendaire Shane MacGowan et les musiques traditionnelles irlandaises. Pas facile mais cet album est entré dans la légende à juste titre avec la reprise de Dirty Old Town qui leur a valu leur plus gros succès. Le titre de l'album est inspiré d'une citation attribuée à Winston Churchill : « Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy, and the lash. » (« Ne me parlez pas des traditions de la Marine. Ce n'est que rhum, sodomie et fouet »), ce qui selon le batteur du groupe, Andrew Ranken, était un très bon résumé de la vie des Pogues ! L’album se conclut par un autre classique, And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda où MacGowan chante d’une manière très émouvante. Un mot de la production réalisée par Elvis Costello qui a compris que, s’il voulait que le groupe donne le meilleur de lui-même, il ne devait rien lui imposer mais au contraire leur laisser leur liberté pour qu’ils ne sonnent surtout pas de façon formatée, ce qui aurait été pire que tout. Costello va d’ailleurs épouser la bassiste du groupe, Cait O'Riordan , peu de temps après. Un grand album des années 80 qui a gardé toute son énergie et sa joie. Allez, laissez-vous aller, montez le volume et servez-vous une bonne pinte : avec un peu d'imagination, on se croirait dans un pub de Dublin !!!😁

Je possède cet album depuis maintenant 25 ans (en cassette et depuis peu en CD) et il fait partie des quelques albums des années 80 qui n'ont a pas pris une ride. J'adore le côté festif et vitaminé de la musique allié à des paroles à l'humour très sombre, où l'alcool et la rue sont omniprésents ainsi que la guerre (The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda). Cet album a aussi traversé les années sans encombre grâce à la qualité de la musique et la richesse de ses textes. L'inimitable voix d'alcoolo irlandais de Shane McGowan est la cerise sur le gâteau !!

Que dire de plus, si ce n'est, que cet album est un "classique" des années 80,
la production d'Elvis Costello à très bien vieilli.Les textes et compositions
sont d'une grande subtilité.

Marrant que personne n'en ait eu l'idée avant The Pogues. En 1984, le groupe destroy introduit le folklore irlandais dans le punk rock. Avec un tiers de respect, un tiers d'irrespect, un tiers de talent, deux doigts de je-m'en-foutisme et le titre d'une phrase attribuée à Winston Churchill décrivant la tradition navale britannique, Rum, Sodomy & The Lash sort moins d'un an plus tard. The Pogues dérive comme laisse imaginer une pochette détournant Le Radeau de la Méduse de Géricault, même si Elvis Costello tient fermement la barre de la production et qu'il ne va pas tarder à épouser la bassiste. Dur en effet de résister à Cait O'Riordan quand elle chante I'mm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day. Mais il y surtout la voix tombée et le sourire édenté du meilleur raconteur d'histoires du Royaume moyennement Uni, titubant mais toujours debout sur le pont. C'est Noël tous les jours chez Shane MacGowan (né un 25 décembre), qui avait rencontré son alter ego, le flûtiste Spider Stacy, dans les toilettes d’un concert des Ramones à Londres. Ce deuxième album regorge de classiques et de chansons de marins échoués dans des ports comme Sally MacLennane ou Dirty Old Town, titre écrit par le chanteur folk communiste anglais Ewan MacColl, difficile à chanter à jeun. En levant le verre au punk celtique éthylique, The Pogues file un coup de vieux à The Dubliners ou Chieftains.
Le groupe pulvérisé réinvente la chanson traditionnelle irlandaise après des hectolitres de Stout et brasse de la pure poésie sur A Pair Of Brown Eyes, l'histoire d'un mec bourré dans un bar qui revient de la guerre et parle de sa copine infidèle pendant que le juke-box joue une chanson de Johnny Cash. Avec accordéon et banjo, le chanteur donne vie à chaque mot sur la relecture de And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, chanson antiguerre du compositeur écossais Eric Bogie qui évoque un sergent australien mutilé pendant la bataille de Gallipoli. Prévisible, la fin de ce grand groupe se révèle moins marrante que le début. Joe Strummer vient remplacer au début des années 90 Shane MacGowan, alors complètement incontrôlable. De gueules de bois en prises de tête politiques, The Pogues finit par jeter l'éponge en 1996 et le guitariste Philippe Chevron meurt en 2013 d'un cancer du poumon. No future, pas de merde sentimentale, un doigt de mélancolie quand même.

No other modern album has ever made the past come alive the way Rum, Sodomy and the Lash did. Folk music always looked back to traditional subjects, but the results were rarely inspiring -- a folk band covering a Scottish ballad, say, would most likely make it excessively sedate and mannered, with a well-intentioned reverence that is only suitable for dead, dusty artifacts in museums.

The Pogues made the past feel real and important. In fact, among all the songs on this album, only "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" and "The Old Main Drag" have anything resembling a modern setting, the former being a drunken brawler for the multicultural age, the latter an inversion of the classic girl-gone-astray lament into a frank, unsentimental tale of drugged-up male prostitution in a clearly contemporary city. Virtually every other song, however, looks back into history in some way, whether by covering traditional songs ("I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day," "Jesse James") or by writing new songs about traditional subjects ("The Wild Cats of Kilkenny"). And the past is made to sound just as fierce and violent as the brawling youths, as cruel as the "cold winter nights" are for the prostitutes. The Irish mythos of Cuchulainn is entirely at home in "The Sick Bed..."

This style is exciting because it is the only way that folk music can be truly genuine. I love Nick Drake as much as anybody else, but these traditional styles were not meant for soft-spoken, sensitive souls. They were written by, and for, rough and inarticulate people who were ground down by monotonous and unpleasant (and short) lives, and who looked to this music to regain a measure of vitality or to express defiance toward their inevitable fate, like the young man whose experience of first love has to occur "by the gasworks wall," and who dreams about chopping up the "Dirty Old Town" around him. Early death is so inescapable that it turns into something to celebrate, like how the character in "Sally MacLennane" leaves his hometown and unsuccessfully tries to "make money far away," only to die from alcohol poisoning the morning after coming home.

These songs do not express or ask for much compassion. The musical arrangement in "The Gentleman Soldier" is even more callous towards the song's deceived "fair maiden" than the lyrics, making her "shame" the subject of a raucous jig. The traumatized veteran in "A Pair of Brown Eyes" receives nothing but uncomprehending loathing from the drunken narrator, who, however, is just as much of a decrepit wreck. Everyone understands that life was not supposed to turn out this way, but simply accepts fate. Perhaps the only meaning to be found in these lives is the fact that someone can still sing about them in a way that makes them real again.

The Pogues were Irish patriots, of course, but strangely enough that theme is almost completely missing from this album (except in the purely musical sense). It is more overtly present on the follow-up album, If I Should Fall From Grace With God. But, as strange and sacrilegious as this may sound, the feeling that emerges from Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is one of purely British nostalgia. Of course, it is a very specific kind -- these lads don't have much sympathy for jingoism or aristocratic elitism, and they cover both the working-class anthem "Navigator" and the anti-war elegy "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda." And yet, the very breadth of these covers -- "...Waltzing Matilda" from Australia, "Jesse James" from America, etc. -- evokes some kind of imperial, pan-English experience whose span went far beyond the boundaries of present-day countries. This experience is now gone, and its loss hovers over this album and feels somehow painful. The direct cause of its extinction was World War I, which is also present here in "A Pair Of Brown Eyes" and "...Waltzing Matilda," and gives a peculiar cast to the anti-war sentiment, as if the real issue was not so much the horror of war as it was the destruction of this shared cultural consciousness. In that sense, this is an unexpectedly profound album, reaching something buried deep inside English-language culture that no other work of its time was able to perceive. The ghosts of history that haunt these songs give them an existential depth that is very rare for any kind of rock or folk music.

The sign of a truly great band is that they write so much first-rate material that it doesn't all fit on the album and ends up spilling over to B-sides, EPs and the like. The Pogues in 1985 definitely fit into this category, as can be seen from the 2005 reissue of Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, which includes six superb bonus tracks that seamlessly fit into the album. "Body Of An American" is a love letter to America from a uniquely Irish perspective (and, consequently, a meditation on both kinds of identity), continuing the album's pan-English themes. And "The Parting Glass" is the best rendition of this traditional drinking lay that you'll ever hear.

5er CD Box, zwar etwas lieblos im ersten Eindruck, ABER:
Mit Erwerb der Box via Amazon/Amazon, also sowohl Verkäufer als auch Versand gibt es sage und schreibe ALLE 5 Alben im Autorip gratis dazu. Da man wie ich finde die ersten 3 Alben, wenn man die Band mag, unbedingt haben muss, ein wahres Schnäppchen, da die CD Box unter Euro 10,- in 5-2023 hier erhältlich ist.

I ordered this CD for ONE song: The Band Played Waltzing Matilda because for me, it's the best war protest song EVER made and is pretty graphic in the telling. Of course there are other tunes on the LP I love, too, like Dirty Old Town, for one (their hit, I get that).
I had this LP on vinyl in the 80s and I have always remembered the album being called RUM, SODOMY, & LUST.
I was a little concerned that the version you offered might be different and that maybe because they're Irish there was some (other) edict in effect where they couldn't put the word "LUST" on their products. (See my review about Coca Cola version of Lola for amplification of this practice.) Well, the CD arrived and this song WAS thankfully on it, so I am a happy camper van Beethoven.
