I recently picked up a pair of these for running on the Appalachian Trail. I've gone through a few pairs of XA Ultras and loved every minute of them, but I wanted to see what the next level of specialization could provide. I really wanted to try some of those S-LAB shoes, but apparently Salomon has decided that those of us with size 13 feet aren't worthy of their efforts. Like many others, I'm lost somewhere in the transition to minimalism. I have a pair of NB MT10s but there's nowhere near enough armor on them to handle the AT. I figured this time I'd choose trail tech over heel drop for at least the winter and figure things out next spring.

First thing I noticed is that these felt a bit narrower than the XAs. A lot of people have reported not needing a break-in period, but that wasn't the case for me. It took about 50 miles for mine to loosen up and start feeling good. The Climashield does indeed run hot, but that shouldn't surprise anyone. The construction is excellent and well thought out. The terrain I run is pretty nasty and I've gotten my toes hooked under a few rocks and roots and there's been plenty of protection.

One of the main reasons I bought these was for the tread pattern. It's amazingly grippy on soft ground and makes running up earthy hills a blast. Works great on gravel too. Unfortunately, it starts to fail on larger rocks, especially downsloping slabs. Since the spikes keep surface contact to a minimum I end up sliding quite a bit, almost as if I were wearing golf cleats.

My biggest disappointment with these shoes has been the durability of the tread. After my first run - only 9 miles (Snicker's Gap - Buzzard Hill) - 4 or 5 of the perimeter spikes sheared completely off. After each subsequent run I'd lose one or two more, and the inner ones are starting to show cracks. The sole is smooth beyond those, so there's no fallback. Once the majority are gone, which is probably going to happen soon, there's not going to be much traction at all. I'm not sure if I'm expecting too much, but every description I've read has indicated that these excel on rocky terrain. I guess their definition of 'rocky' is different than mine.

Given that, I don't think I'd recommend these to anyone unless they only run on soft ground. I can see the non-CS version good for mud/obstacle races, but I think you're still going to have the shearing problem. Had I bought these from one of the many retailers with unconditional return policies I'd have sent them back. Lesson learned.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent trail racing shoe 15 octobre 2012

Bought these shoes specifically for racing in the Asics XTrail, a trail race which includes various conditions dirt, mud, streams, rocks, 854m summit then descent, etc. They performed perfectly in all conditions. My buddy was racing with Salomon XT Wings and in the steepest, muddiest climbs, my Speedcross would grip and stick where his foot would slide. Outstanding traction. Did not get wet until many miles and many puddles and mud holes, and even then stayed relatively dry. They did feel like they got a bit looser once wet and I could have stopped to tighten them up a bit. Not by much as I opted to keep racing and not stop with no problems, including a steep, fast and slippery descent. I experienced none of the inner soles problems mentioned by some, for which I was a bit aprehensive. My only worry would be for racing on hot days, for which I would recommend you do not buy the climashield (CS) but the regular Speedcross version, which I haven't tried. My feet stayed warm despite a start and summit below freezing. Perfect for Fall/Winter races. Also the lugs do wear a bit faster on asphalt, but then you should not be looking at Speedcross if you're looking for road racers. Very satisfied with my purchase.

On the first trial run of these trail shoes, I had three 11 year old boys with me and two dogs. They wanted to play war in the woods, so we went for a walk...then we went off trail and up the side of very steep incline. I thought I would poop out and the kids would laugh at me. Well, right away I noticed that my traction seriously kept my energy focused into the climb, the boys were winded, and I was as well ahead of them, but the shoes were like 4-wheel drive traction and while the boys were losing traction...every step I took produced more climb... Another thing I noticed was my feet were dry in a elements sort of way, it was snowing and the ground was soggy...but the cold and wet never got to my feet. I had a pair of Merrel's but they are clearly outclassed by these shoes in weight, traction, and comfort. When I first pulled these out of the box I was sort of feeling ripped off and walked down to the corner store with them, I didn't like them...but all that changed when I took them into the trails. One last detail that I was shocked and overjoyed with was washing these shoes off. The mud just washed away without any hassle, they washed off like scuba diving fins (materially speaking). I am seriously impressed by these shoes. I no longer walk down to the store with them...too precious for that.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid shoe for running and hiking, but a little snug in the toebox, and the Climashield did NOT work! 24 mai 2014

I'll give these shoes a mixed review. On the one hand, they are snug, comfortable, and rugged. They give excellent grip on virtually all surfaces, and make it very easy to maintain sure footing, even on very uneven terrain. The heel design in particular is great because it self-rights if you strike off-axis, preventing an ankle roll! They are great looking, and the kevlar laces and lace garage features are fantastic. They really are a good shoe overall. However…

The toe box is pretty narrow, so be sure to buy a full size above your size, and try them on in a store first if possible. I usually wear either an 11.5 or a 12, and in these I had to buy a 13! (I've never needed a 13 in any other shoe in my life.)

The biggest gripe, and this one is huge, is that the Climashield and waterproofing stuff just did not work for me. It prevented my feet from getting wet during only very brief splashes (such as running across a very small stream, or stepping in a mud puddle), but when exposed to wet snow, they wetted out and froze almost immediately. So much so, in fact, that I've considered reporting this to Salomon as a manufacturing defect. It was really bad. On an 18 mile mountain hike, I found myself with freezing cold, soaking wet feet, and had to actually take off the shoes and put plastic bags in them to prevent frostbite. Not cool!

So would I recommend them? Not the Climashield version. If you like the Speedcross 3, just go buy the regular version without the waterproofing or insulation. They'll breathe better, be lighter and probably cheaper too. Just remember to size up!

I had wanted this shoe for a long time, but never got to try on a pair in stores to see how they fit, so I read review after review. Finally I decided to take a chance on a whole size larger than I normally wear in Nike Running Shoes. When they arrived right on time I was a little sad that the color didn't match very well to the image on the Amazon website, but the shoe itself fit great.....for about 20 minutes and then became loose and there was a noticeable space between my toes and the toe of the shoe. Before sending them back I wanted to test the "Waterproof" claim everyone had been complaining about. It made it 1 minute and 23 seconds before little drops of water started creeping in.

The return was easy and free with Prime and they sent the new size to me before the old pair had made it back to them. The new pair's colors matched exactly as the website showed, but was tight on my feet for about 20 minutes then fit perfect and comfy. I have a wide foot, but after wearing them for a little while they fit just right to your usual shoe size. I looked up the shoe on the Salomon website and they are never claimed to be "waterproof" they claim to be "Weatherproof". Sticking the entire shoe in a bathtub or a lake is a waterproof test, not a weather test. I have already gone on one 34 degree rainy run and my feet stayed dry and warm the entire run, as well as on my 3 mile run through 6 inches of snow and sheets of ice. not a single slip and zero moisture leakage. This is a great shoe and I feel like it will last through many runs, camp-outs and any everyday adventure.

Clearly its sort of a hit and miss if you'll get the good color match or if you'll get the shoe that wasn't stitched right. Just send it back for a new pair and chances are the next one will be right for you. I only gave it 4 stars because it feels like a traditional styled running shoe with touches of revolutionary design, when I can see it easily being better designed all around as a completely revolutionary running shoe.
