It's been only two weeks and i cannot give you a full review yet, but i can say below confidently:
I have not used my laptop much since i got this. I don't have a smart phone, but this is like one without phone service or connectivity, i imagine. Only time i use my laptop anymore is when i have to do heavy duty typing, organize my pictures and music, and when i want to print something. Emails, skype, net surfing, do it all on tablet.
If you are used to apple products and never worked on Android product, it will take a bit of time to get used to, so it will require some patience. It seems like everything is customizable. Pro is you can personalize it to almost exactly how you want it to function. Con is that you have to go through so many setup options to get there. Default setting is okay, but definitely spend some time on setup to conserve battery and turn off annoying notifications. If you are not familiar with Android and don't want to mess with setup much, apple maybe a better choice. But don't discount this option just yet.
Google play (app store) is setup to auto update all apps. It seems to slow down device and sucks battery. To turn it off, go to Google play store, setting (top left corner of the screen), and turn off auto update apps.
Screensize is about x4 of iPod touch screen (not the whole device, just screen) A person with a larger smartphone may think 7 inch tab is just an extra large smartphone without phone and be unsatisfied.
Not a fan of the soft keyboard, but you can download different keyboard apps to solve the issue. Two things i do like are: numbers are part of the main keyboard, and language option. So many languages. I can type japanese just like on a regular keyboard, which is huge. (I still haven't found a keyboard app offers this AND has better english typing experience)
One cool thing about this tab (maybe if this is standard in all tabs??) is you can set up different users like computer. Everything is completely split. Even pictures you take won't be available for another user to view (though for our case we wish it was a shared album)
camera is ok. Low light takes poor picture, but just change the mode to night and it improves quality quite a bit.
If you have decided to buy this product, make sure to also purchase:
Mini SD card
mini SD card, so that you can move downloaded apps to it to save storage. If you have a card inserted, all pictures you take will be automatically saved on the SD card. The tab comes with 8GB storage, and the mini SD card i got for 10 dollars on amazon adds 32GB more. Tab comes with pre-installed apps you cannot get rid of, so 8GB doesn't go very far.
Packaging was eco friendly with 100% post consumer recycled paper, printed with soy ink. 100% recyclable. This was not expected and was a big plus for me.
If you are like me who wants hands on experience before deciding, go to your local store and play with it first.
I think this is a perfect tab for a beginner with tight budget like us. The price has come down so much since now there is a newer tab called S, but it still seems like a very well built product and i am very satisfied with my first time tablet purchase and experience.
***addtitional info as of 12/26/2016. About storage, fun apps, and more
This tab has Android 4.4.2, Kitkat. What i have read says that starting with this operating system they started preventing some Apps to be moved to SD card. I downloaded photo edit app, which i was able to move to SD card, but the photo i edit won't save on the card. I downloaded an app that imports library from my iTune account but it won't save the music on card. The reason for this restriction is speculated to be in effort to promote and encourage consumer to use Cloud service. 2 years of service is offerred for free with this tab (or maybe for a new samsubg user?) Anyway, i worked around to save music on SD card, and it is fine, just take extra time. There are some apps that helps you move these non-movable apps, (search under SDCARD FIX), but it doesn't solve all issues and some required more tech involvement than i was willing to invest my time on.
IF you are trying to hook up your tablet to a mini projector or any HDMI, this tablet doesn't support the functionality. There is no adaptor out there that could do that either. I believe newer device supports it, but you have to make sure you check whether HDMI is supported or Video Out is supported for it to work. This is one big disappointment for me.
IF you are trying to download Apple Music, this device is currently isn't compatible either. the Apple Music app is in Beta stage, so it may change, but i won't be surprised if it just ever doesn't get supported.Seems as though there is a lot of limitation built into this device. I was buying this to test out to see if we like a tablet in our household. Now I see all the things a tablet could possibly do, I wish it did all of that. With that said, if I had known all of this and I would like having tablet around my household, I would probably have shelled out 50+ dollars to buy newer tablet so that I could do a lot of things that this tablet isn't letting me do.
I think I got greedy with functionality. This tablet still is good for the price and if you aren't looking for the tablet to do all the things that $200+ tablet would do for you, this is still a really good tablet. :)
Now let's make the most out of this cool little device. Here are some free fantastic fun apps to consider downloading:
Pocket - any online materials you may want to read later, just "share" via Pocket (instead of facebook, twitter, and such), and the article will be saved on your Pocket app and read it offline. Youtube videos are viewable when you have internet connection only.
Sony sketch-turn your tab into a drawing board, sketch pad, canvas, and create your own scrapbook page, greeting cards, and simply let your inner artist come through and shine! This is a far better app than game apps if you are looking to kill time.
Photo Director-this app does so much and take your already-proud-of pics to a whole another level! It can also make your less than ordinary picture a piece of art!
iSyncr - if you are still a iTune lover and you have lots of music on iTune but you want the library on your device, this app will do the job for you. The free version will limit you to transferring 100 songs per transfer, but you can do as many transfers as you need to. Also you will have to transfer the music to the device first and then move the music files to the SD card afterwards - it's due to the whole SD card thing I talked about earlier. Yes, it's not as convenient, but it still works, and the transfer is fast.
Musixmatch - this is an app that shows you lyrics of the music you are playing from your music library. It's cool. There is a function that works just like Shazam, music identifier and also displays lyrics at the same time. This app is actually a really cool music player app, so instead of using the built in music player app, I use this app as default.
Crackle - shows Sony Entertainment TV shows and movies. Selections are not anything like NetFlix or anything like that, but it's FREE! I love watching Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which is Crackle Original and hosted by Jerry Seinfeld.
Avast products - they are really good app to keep your device protected, cleaned up, saves battery, and it's free! Install Avast Mobile Security, Avast Battery Saver, and Avast Cleanup. It's amazing how much junk get saved and take up your limited memory by simply browsing internet and Play Store
A couple of my relatives have both the iPad and the iPad Mini, but when I tried both of them myself, nothing compares to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. The iPad Mini is a little bigger than this and a little lighter, but from what I experienced, the Samsung is better and it saved me $200-400.
The reading is great and I mostly download my books straight from Google Play Books and the Amazon Kindle Store. The Wattpad app (YouTube for E-books) is an awesome app for downloading free books written by teens and tranditional/self-published authors. The keyboard is great when it comes to commenting on the works and also typing my own stories.
The battery lasts much longer, too. I had mine at 100% charged and it lasted for about twelve hours of playing time (with the brightness turned to low). I have the Netflix app and I can watch the videos perfectly. It's crystal clear.
Listening to music is much more clear and easier when you put some ear buds on. The speaker is on the back of the device.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 is a perfection! You should buy it!
