Description du produit

From Library Journal

Sex advice columns provide enlightenment for the erotically challenged as well as voyeuristic entertainment, and the aptonymic Savage delivers on both counts. Channeling Dr. Ruth through the acid pen of H.L. Mencken, he leaves no fool unskewered while delivering startlingly frank, howlingly funny, and consistently excellent guidance for the intimate dilemmas of straights, gays, and everyone else. With his six-year-old column now syndicated in 16 newspapers, Savage maintains that his gayness gives him an advantage in his craft. Certainly his large hetero fan club?as well as this book?testify to his catholic skills. Dingbat-lovers, beware. Savage does not use four-letter words so much as wear them, with considerable and appropriate impact. The unique effect is of old-fashioned common sense, unconstrained by political correctness and cloaked in ultraradical lingo. Especially recommended for libraries in urban and university locations and wherever Savage Love is syndicated.?Martha Cornog, American Coll. of Physicians, Philadelphia

Présentation de l'éditeur

Welcome to the hot new wave of writing about sex: Savage Love. Columnist Dan Savage has hand-picked over 300 letters from six years worth of "Savage Love," a no-holds-barred syndicated sex-advice column which runs in 16 papers in the United States and Canada, including The Village Voice and the San Francisco Weekly. An original and funny thinker, thrashing around in the playground of human sexuality, Savage advises on a wide range of titillating topics:* What is the best seduction music?* How do I come out to my fundamentalist parents?* What is so wonderful about intercourse, anyway?Forget Anka Radakovich and Isadora Altman. Tune in to Dan Savage as he answers these questions and much more in his own uniquely irreverent and sexually spunky style.

Wondeful book. I used to read his column's in one of the East Bay Free papers, and they were so very funny, and right on! Wonderfully written. Very witty! He really cracks me up with his responses, and he keeps it real. Like he says in the front of the book, it's for everyone, and it certainly is.

For an atheist liberal like me, Savage isn't likely to ruffle my feathers but if you're a conservative Christian? He will make you see red. Savage picks apart the bigoted religious and/or republican homophobes with a funny, well tonight out delivery that is backed by a lot of stories that are deeply personal and meaningful. It is virtually impossible to read about his love for his husband and imagine how they could not get married!
The way to overcome prejudices is to know your supposed enemy. That is how Dick Cheney changed his mind, how Sen. Robertson (?) changed his and countless others: their children announced they were gay and suddenly, the restrictions these parents out on the people now felt like they out them on their children and that was not acceptable. Change comes this way. When Savage leads the reader through his,own experiences as well as shining a light on the gay hatred of the conservative, Christian, right wing family-centered groups, it makes those people seem as if they were just cockroaches, desperate to be seen as The Most Family Friendly Person Ever. In truth, they dissect families and prevent new ones from forming. Dan I'll change your mind or make you feel like you are part of the crowd.

Dan Savage might hate to hear this, but he has a fairly conventional morality. Yes, that gay advocate of sexual pleasure, known from time to time to advocate infidelity, actually comes across as a person who, through hearing the whinings and self-deception of thousands of letter writers, has come to some general conclusions like: honesty is really a good idea in the long run, consideration will usually rebound in your favor, etc.
No, nobody is going to read this book to hear from someone with a neoconservative ethics. You're going to read it to get some pointers on oral or anal sex, or for the laughs, or to learn about the best sex tip: talking to your partner about what you want.

I only discovered Dan Savage from an appearance on Bill Maher's show. I have now made my way through two of his books, as a kind of guilty pleasure, but his advice and honesty are so refreshing! He does not mince words and does not suffer fools, but at my advanced age of 68, that's a really good thing!
