This is one of the gems in the Naxos super-bargain catalogue: a performance by Hungarian musicians who clearly have Schubert's style in their blood and make their instruments sing with the sheer joy of music-making. They achieve a timeless poise in that mysterious, brooding introduction and again in the exquisite Adagio without sacrificing the requisite sense of momentum; then the rustic folk elements of the Allegro vivace and the Andante with themes and variations cheerfully emerge to provide balance and contrast with the more sombre preceding ideas. The minuet can emerge as rather stolid in the wrong hands; not here, and the arresting, growling string tremolos with which final movement begins transport us into the Gothic-Romantic world of "Der Erlkönig" (after all, we have already heard a theme from "Der Wanderer" in the first movement) and perhaps "Der Freischütz" (1821) before the joyous release of the intense and complex Allegro. The 1992 recording has just enough light and air around it to prevent the microphone picking up too many minuscule blemishes or extraneous noises - not always the case with recordings of chamber music these days - and the bonus is a miniature delight after the symphonic scale of the main work.

I have been buying Naxos cds for about two years now, and I have a collection of about 100. I have been satisfied with every single recording. Especially this one. I had no idea that Schubert had written octets. I really enjoy octets, so I knew I had to buy this cd right away, and I am very glad I did. The Schubert Ensemble of Budapest plays wonderfully. The sound is very good, and overall a wonderful recording.

Par JohnL - Publié sur Amazon.com

Franz Schubert penned the D.803 Octet in F Major in 1824, modelling it after the immensely popular Septet, Op.20 of Beethoven. It has the same number of movements (six). Schubert's Octet adds a second violin as the eighth instrument. This Naxos recording is a decent one, played by the Schubert Ensemble of Budapest. It is a longer work than Beethoven's, stretching to over 57 minutes. But Schubert has many entertaining ideas woven in that make this Octet enjoyable to listen to. Recommended.
