Although this album gives no exact recording date, it may be worked out from the notes that it was made in late 1991 when Terfel was only 26 and still known as the Lieder Prize singer from the Cardiff Singer of the World competition and runner-up to Hvorostovsky in the main event.

Immediately striking is the clarity and idiomatic quality of Terfel's German diction and the dynamic range of his voice. He can thrill the listener by expanding his tone is such a manner that no-one would even then have been surprised to learn that Wotan lay in his future repertoire, yet he can scale his voice down to a caressing pianissimo. Just occasionally this puts his superb partner, Malcolm Martineau, slightly in the shade, acoustically speaking, but there are plenty of opportunities to appreciate the delicacy and subtlety of the pianist's phrasing, especially in such songs as the celebrated "Ständchen".

I have a number of favourite versions of this song collection - not really a cycle - including those by Brigitte Fassbaender, John Shirley Quirk and Jorma Hynninen but despite the youth of the singer this one has claims to being the best of all if you like an account which is really sung out full voice, in quasi-operatic style but also at times startlingly intimate. Terfel is able to dominate these songs and touch the brassy vault of heaven then stoop to caress the listener's ear with a dreamy half-voice.

The songs themselves run a surprising gamut of expression but tend to draw heavily on typical Romantic tropes which conflate nature with love and death, employing pathetic fallacy as a metaphor for the lover's emotions. The Rellstab songs tend to be more strophic and lighter in mood, more akin to "Die Schöne Müllerin" whereas the Heine settings are starker and less melodic; thus in the order in which they are presented here - presumably that in which they were posthumously published by Haslinger - the opening and closing songs, "Liebesbotschaft" and "Die Taubenpost" (the sole setting of a poem by Seidl who is closer in temperament to Rellstab) are amongst the most insouciant and ecstatic outpouring of love ever penned, yet they are succeeded and preceded respectively by two of Schubert's most morbid songs, the baleful, brooding "Kriegers Ahnung" and the weird, haunting "Der Doppelgänger". So the generalisation for the Rellstab songs does not by any means always hold true, any more than are all the Heine settings uniformly dark; indeed "Das Fischermädchen" is strophic and melodic, as serene as you could wish, especially when it is sung as smoothly and expressively as it is here.

Despite his youth, Terfel gives us here a sophisticated and nuanced account of these marvellous songs and he is accompanied by perhaps the best living exponent of the art in Martineau. Fifty minutes is short measure by today's standards and Fassbaender supplements "Schwanengesang" with five more contemporaneous songs but I don't think that should be an issue when the artistic here quality is so fine.

I'm on page 18 searching for the perfect cd to represent Schuberts Schwanengesang. Your Items do not allow for one to listen to them. Most people won't buy unknown content. A little extra work to add content samples would go a long way in selling your products.
