Spyro Gyra's keyboard player is a talent monster but this is not Spyro music. Schuman Nature is much more in the tradition of a jazz trio (piano, drums, bass). The music is clean and tight and well defined as opposed to some of the more free-flowing, loosely associated typical jazz trios. This band gels together well.

After a stunning "Nefertiti," this album declines a bit in quality and becomes quite derivative. Yes, I've heard Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner too. Tom is very talented, but there is a depth missing. Perhaps it's from all those of years of playing fusion. You'll search in vain for his soul.
Drummer Cora Coleman needs to find another line of work.
Still, on the whole, interesting. And worth the price.

We can all agree that Spyro Gyra's piano man is really gifted and fills that group to the brim with his unsurpassed technical skills. But for a more introspective small group acoustic turn -- less would be much more. Lurking within "Schuman Nature" are all the fusion shadings that serve Tom so well in that format and on his other recordings as a leader. This is as close to a straight-ahead date that he has offered, but it lacks heart and I'm still waiting for the real deal. Not helping matters, Cora Coleman's drums are laid deep in the mix and merely tag along for the ride. There are glimpses of trio greatness here, such as bassist Dwayne Dolphin's "Portrait of Adrian". Dwayne has played with some old school talent and I feel his experience with melodic bass lines, especially in the lower range, keeps this date somewhat grounded. However, Tom can hardly be restrained on most of this disc and if you like your jazz with frills and thrills this most likely will give you a rush.

There comes a time, perhaps after years of trying to fit into a particular groove or walk a particular walk, when something magical happens. The artist crosses over into a realm where beautiful music pours forth like it had been imprisoned somewhere in the dark recesses of his soul. Delivering yet another outstanding CD on his own label, JazzBridge Music LLC, Tom Schuman proves he's definitely come into his own.
Schuman's latest collection of originals and standards, "Schuman NATURE," this time in a delightful trio setting that includes Schuman on piano, Ameen Saleem and Dwayne Dolphin on bass and Cora C. Coleman on drums, brings the listener back to jazz basics. It's all about the beauty of pieces like Tyner's Search for Peace and Monk's Ruby My Dear, laced with Schuman's stunning originals such as Thelma Faye and Marion. The nicest reward for the fortunate listener is hearing the exquisite purity and simplistic beauty a trio setting can offer. And Schuman absolutely shines!
It's hard for many to disassociate the name of Tom Schuman from Spyro Gyra, but Schuman has come full circle into the light...a jazz pianist, creating beauty and preserving the past. Suzi Price- jazzreview.com
