Upon opening the book and reading the first few sentences, I was hooked. Gwen Michaels is a former assassin, but when she is attacked in her own home by an unknown assailant, she is thrust back into her old element. Impossible for me to put down once started, the story kept me on pins and needles as I followed Gwen's investigation. I loved being privy to her thoughts and ideas. For Gwen, life is simple, decisions are unambiguous. Gwen is a tough cookie and her fiancé, Jack soon learns things about her past that Gwen had hoped never to reveal. Now Jack must step up because Gwen is determined to protect him, whatever the cost.

I was swept away by this tale. Gwen fascinated me, and I genuinely liked and cared about her. She is not your stereotypical protagonist. As the story progressed, the action was relentless; I loved that the descriptive details were kept to a minimum. I was provided enough information to set the ongoing movie firmly in my mind without having to slog through the minutia. This book is a definite keeper, for me. It is tightly structured with above average editing - I noted a couple of word usage errors and a time/place transition that was disconcerting for a moment, only. If you love fast-paced, action-intensive stories, featuring a fearless, savvy, combat-trained female protagonist with ice in her veins, then you, too, should get this book.

HASH(0x8bec9ae0) étoiles sur 5 short, with fast pacing 31 mars 2011

I like when authors include a word count with the summary to give you a vague idea of how long the text is. I'm really not sure what the word count for this would be, or the equivalent number of pages in paperback - but it seems pretty short. The pacing makes for an excellent suspense/thriller and the the mystery is interesting enough to keep your attention. The fact that the third sentence in the book had a repeated word worried me a little, but I actually only noticed a few more glaring errors. Even books from big name publishers seem to have weird errors or at least formatting issues in their kindle editions though.
I've started to give "indie" authors a shot and with this author I'm glad that I did! Hopefully there will be more to come.

I received a complimentary issue of this book in exchange for reviewing it. I found the plot to be a bit too contrived and the writing amateurish. There were grammatical errors which I found distracting: "your" was used in place of "you're" several times throughout the book.

The narrator of the book kept switching between the heroine of the book, an observer and the suspects. I found that very distracting and displeasing.

The ending was also not very surprising. I gave this book 3 stars because it is a fast read.

Secrets by S.L. Pierce is an attention grabber from page one. Told mostly from a first person perspective, we meet Gwen Michaels. She is not your average housewife. She has a past, a past that she was starting to enjoy just a little too much and so she did the wise thing and got out when she could. Being part of an elite group of specially trained operatives, Gwen certainly knows how to take care of herself.

Opening straight into the action, Gwen finds a man in her house. Not just an ordinary man, but a hired killer, who thought Gwen would be an easy target because she is a woman. Not having time to play around, Gwen quickly finds out the information she can and puts an end to future kills from this man. With her secret identity still intact, Gwen must follow the clues and find out who wants her dead and why.

Jack is your stereotypical good guy and happens to be Gwen's husband. He is a good person and has an even greater heart. Easily able to overlook certain things, he only sees the good in people. This makes him the perfect balancing stone for Gwen and so he is shocked when Gwen is forced to tell him the truth. Gwen's dark past may just be enough to break his good heart.

Secrets was a quick, easy and enjoyable read. I read it in one sitting because Ms. Pierce grabbed my attention from the start and provided just the right amount of mystery and action to keep me wanting more. I found myself asking the same questions that Gwen was and that made Secrets believable and realistic. Gwen may be a highly trained killer but she still has faults and this makes her a character that is sure to be loved.

This is a whodunit, with a side order of "believable" action at its best. Not your regular mystery novel; it keeps you glued to your chair, a real page turner. The author does an excellent job tying the characters together in a neat bow with a twist you never expect. The reader is not bogged down with useless details, but instead their attention never strays, they are captured by every moment. There's enough background to understand where each character comes from, and a glimpse into where they're headed. The action parts of the book are not far out, hard to believe, but are heart-pumping never the less.

This is one heroine you like, from page one. Gwen Michaels is a down to earth assassin, who left the assassination game because she was beginning to like it too much. She doesn't believe in gray areas, it's all black and white. You try to kill her, you don't get to live.

The author does a great job at capturing the reader's undivided attention, which is why I found it to be a quick read.
