Modern commercial martial arts, self-defense, and combatives instruction often fails to prepare students for the realities of a truly violent attack. This is because of the dependency on prearranged counters, techniques, and memorized sequences of movement masquerading as fight preparation.

The whole approach to modern teaching is fundamentally flawed. That is, the approach to teaching practical self-defense skills to people other than elite professional athletes is flawed. The typical self-defense and martial arts student cannot apply memorized strikes, blocks, and complex techniques under the stress and friction of a real violent encounter.
Forget stances, blocks, and techniques. They just give you a false sense of security. If you find yourself face to face with an aggressive and violent criminal, the emotional dump you will experience is nothing like what you are used to while training in the safety of your martial arts school.
When facing a real attacker, you should plan for:
•Fear, anxiety, and stress
•Tension and the inability to move the way you have practiced
•Positions that come from natural reactions, not practiced stances
•Friction (the unknown factors such as poor lighting, feeling sick and weak, slippery ground, injury, and any possible turn of events)
•Starting the fight one step behind (you will be caught off-guard)
•Overcoming a disadvantage
Whether you have trained before or not, you have a set of movements and reactions that are fast, reliable, and automatic. These take no thought, analysis, or decision to launch because they are pure reflex. You can take back the advantage and survive a violent attack.
Don’t be bullied and intimidated anymore. Learn to apply your innate natural abilities against violent attacks.
Real-world violence is brutal and ruthless. But you do not need to become a crazed maniac in order to defend yourself. Most defensive tactics programs assume you want to become a fighting machine or some kind of animal. Why not, after all the instructors probably think you want to be just like them. But many people are happy with who they are. They just want to know what to do when confronted by a situation they cannot get out of.

It is unacceptable how many people turn to martial arts, MMA, or other forms of self-defense training just to spend years and thousands of dollars to learn prearranged counters to complicated attacks.
On the street, these techniques are worthless. I have found that using natural reactions as the foundation for defensive work is the best way to prepare students for real violence as they train.
