Unfortunately the spot where it curves down over your ears has a design flaw. There is a section where the plastic is very weak. You can see where there is a space for them to route the wires that go to the speaker to each earpiece. In that section the plastic is small and it will crack. The headset is rated for outdoor use and the ads have images of people doing activities such as hiking etc. I used the first one just for voice recognition/dictation, gaming and listening to music. One of the awesome features it has is a long boom that filters out noise so it is great for voice recognition/dictation or gaming even if you are in loud environments. It was NOT used for strenuous activity, yet after using it for some time, the spot I mentioned that goes over our ears broke. The headset then would not fit unless I duck taped it or something. I called and explained that the headset has a design flaw and asked if there was a version that had different material or had been updated. They replied no but stated they could warranty it or give me a refund. I was torn because I really liked the headset but the design was still flawed. I decided to give them another shot and tried to convince myself that the one I had received was defective. So I sent them the broken one back and received another one promptly. Long story short, the second one I was very careful to not torque and was gentle with. I did use it once on my motorcycle since that was the purpose of it. (Sena makes this and another version for motorcycle helmets which if you are researching this headset you probably already know.) Unfortunately a few months later the plastic by the speakers began to crack and crumble off. Since the headset had already been replaced once I ran into some issues......
Unfortunately the design has not been updated to better material where the plastic is weak. I really liked the headset but if it has a design flaw you will eventually end up with it breaking. There have been many people who have had the same complaints yet nothing has been done to correct the issue. I can't complain as to the technology this headset employs, but I can not recommend something that has a design flaw and will eventually break on you in an unreasonably short time.
However after only a couple uses the earpiece broke on one set broke. I contacted technical support several times via email, and never received a response. Since we were in the Bahamas at the time, we repaired the earpiece with electrical tape. Believe me, we were treating both sets VERY carefully. Having never heard back from technical support about a replacement, we continued to use these, and now the other earpiece on the same set has broken, in exactly the same place. Very disappointing.
I will again try to contact customer service this time via phone and will update if I recieve a response.
Here's what I like: Great sound. Easy, two-way communications with my wife on the bow of our boat while anchoring, docking, or going through shallow passes. The full duplex mode makes these so easy to use (once set to intercom mode). The mic really does eliminate a lot of extraneous noise. They are pretty comfortable and feel secure on my head.
And here's what I don't like: Quite an involved process to pair two units with lots of button presses and holding buttons down for a specific number of seconds. It really is a clunky user interface - not intuitive at all! To make matters worse, the manuals are really bad. I think they were probably written by someone who has English as a second language and there are things that must have been lost in the translation. I wouldn't normally care as I don't often read manuals, but using these headsets are so confusing that I need to get the manual out each time we've used them (four times now).
Each time I pair our two headsets together, they fail to pair on the first try. I wait, and wait and finally it gives up. They have always paired on the second try. It would sure be nice to be able to set them so their default, power-on mode is paired. (And while I'm asking for things that aren't there, why can't we have one, simple power switch or button?)
To try to fix the pairing problem, I tried to upgrade the firmware. It worked on our first headset, with quite a bit of trial, retrial and error, but I can't make the computer (tried two computers now) recognize our second headset. I gave up.
Here's my last complaint, and this one is not Sena's fault: The sound is so good, we can hear all the little things uttered under our breath, including all the grunts, sighs, and groans, and creative language when things don't go as planned.
Update: in three months of using these headsets, they have failed numerous times, we are either unable to turn them on or they shut down unexpectedly. One appeared "bricked" but I found others with the same issue and some where able to get them working again but updating the firmware. I am really, really not impressed with the quality. They only reason I give them any stars at all is because when the work, they are great. I just wish there were more of those times when they worked!
The other people at the dock walk over and say"wow, you guys are pros, you must have been boating together forever."
We may be together forever with these speakers. Communication is what says ends marriages. It ends swim platforms too.
