Présentation de l'éditeur

This story was written as a part of the Goodreads Male/Male Romance Group's "Love Has No Boundaries" event, and deals with the mature subject matter of a man loving another man.

Since the day he was dropped off at a Federation camp by parents who used him to gain political favor, cybernetic killing machine Soldier Fourteen existed only to carry out his orders. But when commanded to kill a baby girl, he defies his commander and deserts the Federation, seeking a place in the universe for himself and the defenseless innocent he's promised to protect.

Connell harvests the sea to feed his colony on a new, undeveloped world with no reason to attract Federation attention. When an armored figure appears on the beach, holding an infant, Connell fears the worst, but he may have found the best.

This concept is fresh and original. The way the author describes this space suit that The Sentinel wears is very vivid, creative, and futuristic. The way the two lovers come together is logical and sweet. The way one character is kept from death while another is allowed to naturally embrace it was very well done. In short, I just loved this story. A very good read. And I forgot to mention the very real village that this author managed to create on some distant world. Good stuff.

I love stories that result from writing contests. Yes, this is one entry and it's very well done. The setting is in the future, Fourteen is a soldier for the Federation. This story focuses on his life before and after his service and how he discovers and embraces his humanity and family.

The characters are deeply drawn, great world building, strong relationships and I'm still amazed this is a novella. Or maybe I read it slower - There was so much packed in such a short space that I was lingering over each page. Some of the themes are redemption and hope. This is a journey of self discovery and along the way a romance with Connell. Excellent m/m romance set in a futuristic setting.

My only question is . . . The Federation was destroying colonies for hundreds of years. I'm surprised nothing had changed as each generation was mentioned - Surely there's uninhabited worlds now due to all the 'harvesting'. So my big thought. . . Any people left? !! It'd be nice to see a follow up story of some sort. What happens to Connell's planet and the people there. - Dan's Wife

I enjoyed the beauty of this story. I'm not used to reading much science fiction but I significantly appreciated the emotional aspect of the two main characters. It almost had me in tears at one point since it was so touching, especially near the end. It was a creatively written and hauntingly sweet read. :)

Quoted from a good reads review:

This review will not be a summary, but more of a discussion.

I believed that I've grown weary of the M/M genre; the stories had become too formulaic for me, and I grew bored in my plebian ways. This book (and a few others I've recently discovered) has renewed my interest in the M/M genre. If you are common like me, I suggest you pick up this novel and perhaps join me in in praising this work.

I would consider this book more of an exploration of the dark possibility of human society and government/governance. It just so happens, the birds eyes view here highlights a gay couple. The writing is superb, it has a light handed feel (which is rare for M/M genre). Having a light feel, it allows for dark concepts to be explored, of rape (by the more powerful of children), lack of parental love, military exploitation of the poor, weak and hopeful, and prejudices founded on evolutionary needs.
The story between the two gay characters is truly beautiful. It explores the concept of love and family between gay men, love between age difference, the strong and broken, and across cultures. It also explores the idea of what happens when a couple ages past sexual possibilities.

All in all, this book is beautifully written. It has qualities, I believe, of a beautiful piece of art and writing.

Did I mention it's free for Kindle readers? If I had to pay, I would still give it five stars. It truly was a pleasure to read and keep on my tablet at all times."

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent short story 11 février 2014

I really enjoyed this story. I read it over two coffees in a single sitting. The things I liked are: tight prose with no obvious (glaring) spelling or grammar errors; likeable main characters that are developed sufficiently for a short story; how at the end, history and mythology are combined; and, although this story ends the possibility of a sequel is left open.

I would have liked the story to be longer and there were enough concepts and depth for this to be a novel. Highly recommended.
