Présentation de l'éditeur

The Caldecott Honor book and modern classic now in boardbook format. Finally!

Nearly twenty years ago, Ed Young translated the ancient parable of the seven blind men and the elephant into a modern children's classic, one as simple as it is profound. A lesson in colors, numbers, the days of the week and most important, knowledge, this beautifully illustrated book has stood the test of time and continues to entertain and teach. Now in board book format, even the youngest children can experience the beauty and wisdom.

Biographie de l'auteur

Caldecott medalist Ed Young was born in Tientsin, China, and brought up in Shanghai. He cites the philosophy of Chinese painting as an inspiration for much of his work. "A Chinese painting is often accompanied by words," he explains; "they are complementary. There are things that words do that pictures never can, and likewise, there are images that words can never describe."

Mr. Young has been illustrating children's books for more than twenty years and has won many awards. He received the 1990 Caldecott Medal for his book Lon Po Po, and his much-lauded collaboration with anthologist Nancy Larrick, Cats Are Cats, was named one of the Ten Best Illustrated Books of 1988 by The New York Times.

Mr. Young studied at the University of Illinois, the Art Center of Los Angeles, and Pratt Institute in New York City. He and his family live in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic folk tale 30 juin 2014

Seven Blind Mice by Ed Young is a terrific folk tale about seven blind mice. When something new comes each mouse goes out to see what it is and they all come back with different ideas. The final mouse looks at the entire thing and figures out what it is teaching a great lesson.

I purchased the picture book as well as the audio version of this book. The audio version is beautiful and the background music is magical and really adds to the story. I used it in my music classroom because the music was so fantastic.

I recommend this story to kids 3-7. It's a fantastic read-a-loud.

The kids were mesmerized by the illustrations. It is a good thing that the retelling of this tale is well done, otherwise the illustrations could easily overpower and diminish the prose.

This is a classic, but I keep it in a special place to hand out as a reward for a job well done in the classroom. The kids can't just go up to the bookshelf and take it out during silent reading or choice time because a tug of war over turns or who got it first is inevitable. I don't want a torn book as the result of their loving the it.

This is a wonderful story in its own right taken to a whole new level with these illustrations. I think an art teacher could create several inspiring lessons based upon these illustrations. Highly recommend.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Teamwork and senses 10 décembre 2011

This book has great illustrations and is a handy tool for kids learning about teamwork or their five senses, particularly touch. The seven blind mice take the entire book trying to figure out what a particular object is. They all think that this object (an elephant) is something different depending on where they touch it and it takes all of them to figure out what it is. Engaging for kids age 3-6 or so.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book! 11 septembre 2013

The book is awesome to teach that students should view thing as a whole instead as a part. Each of the mice only analyze on part of the object. Once the last mouse analyzes the whole thing, he realizes what it was.
