HASH(0x8c5e42f4) étoiles sur 5 A great YA Paranormal story 6 décembre 2012
Par HBurrows - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I was quickly immersed into this story that I found not only engaging but so well written I didn't realize how fast the time was going by until the book was done and so was half my day! The characters were well developed and the rolls they played were very true to life. Yes this is a paranormal but not one filled with magic filled characters, only people aware that the other side does exist. Except for a certain character that can literally suck the life out of any party!

Joy is your average Junior attending Ash Grove, a private High School for the Performing Arts. Not fitting in with the in crowd is normal for her, but wouldn't it be nice to be accepted? So going out on a limb she takes a dare from Shelia to go into a graveyard at night and find a rose. But she ends up finding more than she expects and her life is changed with a simple kiss. We follow along with Joy as she deals with teenage angst over a sick father, a lack of musical ability and a new love life. With a group of great friends she finds out just how much it will take to uncover the truth behind a new neighbor who holds more than the guardianship to her new love, Tanner, she holds his life in her hands.

I will have to mention that this is a YA book but it does have some of the late teen drama that some parents may not want the younger YA readers exposed to including characters smoking and some sexual content that leads to a teen pregnancy. I don't want to say more and give the story away, but I know I have younger daughters who read YA books that I would rather not be exposed to this element at this time. Not that they don't know this goes on, but the context of the story implies that it is ok to smoke and be a pregnant teen in a high school level with teachers who know and are fine with it. This should not deter readers of any age from reading it as it is too good of a book to miss! I can't wait to see where the Author takes it from here!

I liked how this book started. I liked the concept for the book. I thought it was well written. I think the main characters emotions came off the page, and were realistic.
I didn't like that the dad seemed really distant from his daughter. I didn't understand why he didn't want her with him.
I get that one night things got out of hand with her guy, and she ends up pregnant, unfortunately those things happen. what I didn't like, was that no adult really seems to care. When her father finds out, he sort of says nothing, and just raises his eyebrows. Not realistic in my opinion.
i also didnt like that there werent consequences for her choice. Not really helping to set high standards for teens, when books make it seem ok because they were in love. I thought that it could have been better.

Just because a book is clearly targeted at Y/A, does not mean there should be little to no character depth, inexplicably obtuse characters and tv program plot structure. I was disappointed with all aspects of this book except the concept. The idea could have been great, instead it was stock characters, predictable outcomes and the main characters self-deprecation drones on and on...she's not really pretty, not like her (trampy) friends, she's not really talented, not like her mom...her hair is awful, she's not skinny, why would he want little old her - blah, blah, blah. Is the author trying to convince me that her own character has no redeeming qualities? Then there is that ridiculous character arc from un-kissed naive virgin to mom with virtually no angst or thought, all happening in the last half of the first book. Where the heck do they go from there, with the girl just a junior in high school? How does the world at large react to the unexplained disappearance of a notorious beauty/entrepreneur? How was it that no one realized she had been alive for centuries if she was so famous? I'm all for suspending disbelief but only if the author offers up a plausible explanation. To me, this book read like a first effort from a young, untried, unedited author - draft one.

I write this with fear and trepidation as I am not at all sure I can do this wonderful book justice. The writer has a very high standard of work and with this book she has left that high standard far behind. Very few books do I complete in one sitting but I read this one to the point that my eyes were watering. I could not wait until the next day to find what was going to happen next. This book is listed as young adult however I am an old adult and enjoyed it completely. I was tasked into reading this by a beautiful, elegant and winsome lady. I am a pushover for such but now I think I owe her jewelry for telling me about Amanda De Wees. The story flows beautifully and the characters are devloped so well you feel as if you know them. I can not give this book more than five stars but it would receive ten if Amazon did not have silly rules. I can not recommend higher.

The writing felt very young. The story line was good, however the story and characters did not flow well.
I really do not like giving less than three stars, but I also hate skimming pages... I wanted to know the end, and therefore made myself at least skim the last few chapters.
I am very happy I got this book while free.
