Présentation de l'éditeur

Richard Thompson's Cul de Sac follows the antics of four-year-old Alice Otterloop as she navigates her way through her suburban town and life's ups and downs at Blisshaven Preschool. More than half of our nation's population resides in the burbs, and suburbanites everywhere will easily recognize Cul de Sac's tree-lined streets, big-box retail stores, and kiddy crunchy cereals, along with the revealing backseat conversations between Alice and her brother.Thompson's paintbrush captures humorously poignant and reflectively thoughtful watercolor scenes that offer commentary on life and how we choose to live it. Appearing in more than 100 newspapers, Cul de Sac has garnered Thompson critical praise from both the National Cartoonists Society and the Society of Illustrators.

I was first introduced to the comic strip "Cul de Sac" about a year and a half ago. The strip was refreshing. "Cul de Sac" is seen mostly from the perspective of four-year-old Alice Otterloop, a preschooler who lives on a cul de sac with her parents and her older brother Petey. Petey is a picky eater, a germaphobe, and more than slightly obsessive compulsive. Mrs. Otterloop is a stay-at-home Mom. Meanwhile, Mr. Otterloop dutifully goes to work each day in a car so small that Alice believes it's part cuisine cart (or cuisinart as Alice says it). I really enjoy reading "Cul de Sac". It really is unlike any other strip currently being written. The closest way I can describe it is a cross between "Peanuts" and "Calvin and Hobbes".

SHAPES AND COLORS is the third collection of "Cul de Sac" comics and the fourth book (there was a treasury printed earlier in 2010). I'm not for sure of the exact dates, but I think the strips in SHAPES AND COLORS originally ran from December 2008-September 2009. Some of the storylines in the book include Alice learning about stactic elastricity, the Otterloops having a night out at PJ Piehole's and the ensuing trials with the toy sword Alice receives there, Alice's discovery of Petey's history of mankind in shoebox diorama form, and the Blisshaven Preschool trip to the Li'l Critters Petting Zoo. In addition, there's the usual stories about Petey's picking eating, Alice and her friends adventures at the playground superslide, and Alice's routines on the manhole cover. Ernesto is back and Petey's maybe love interest Viola appears more often. "Cul de Sac" is a wonderful comic strip, but it's really starting to come into its own; the strip with the promise of so much potential is really starting surpass that potential. SHAPES AND COLORS is a must-have book for "Cul de Sac" fans as well as those who just enjoy great comic strips.

I became an admirer of Cul de Sac and Richard Thompson two years ago. The strip in now in its fourth year. I am constantly amazed by the quality of work that Mr.Thompson achieves. I just read Shapes and Colors for the second time and I laughed, snorted, cried, and maybe even wet myself a little by the timing of his jokes.
I have been studying a lot of older strips in the last three years and have noticed a few things.
1. It takes at least a year for the creator to find the groove for the strip.
2. They have the groove of the strip but by the second or third year the strip looses steam and it feels like the artist has lost interest.
3. The art seems rushed, sloppy, and the artist no longer explores be best usage of the panels.

Cul de Sac is in a class with only a few other strips ever. EVER!

Mr Thompson has not only continued to improve on his storytelling but his art is more entertaining than ever. To be honest, he is on the way to being considered one of the greats in comic strips lore.

After reading the three volumes you can see why Bill Watterson is one of Richard Thompson's biggest fans(Watterson wrote the intro in the first collection). Speaking of introductions... This volume has Petey Otterloop ( one of the main characters) writing the Introduction. I don't think any cartoonist has one of their characters writing the intro before. Bold move or was everyone else was busy? Its just down right funny!

I highly recommend this book. It is worth the money just for the beautiful cover! Enjoy reading!

Great as always. I no longer get a newspaper and sometimes get behind in reading the strips on-line, so it is great to catch-up. Cul de Sac is one of the two best strips around (With Pearls Before Swine). Richard Thompson is amazing.

HASH(0x97c67a74) étoiles sur 5 The wonder of childhood captured in unique art and smart writting 26 août 2011

If you ever wondered what happened to the funny pages, they didn't die, they are just being ignored. While the giants we love like Peanuts, Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes are gone and we are often left with multiple imitators, Cul de Sac breaks the mold and offers us a unique style of art that perfectly captures the wonders of being a child without dumbing it down or phoning it it. The main characters are Alice and Petey Otterloop, two kids with completely different taste and outlooks in life. Petey is a neurotic recluse of an old man trapped in the body of a boy while Alice can only be explained as a whirlwind of sugar, spice and napalm. The adults of the world offer counterpoints to the children that run it and the artist gives us a wonderful style that on first look appears to be scribbles, but they bleed through with more heart and emotion than any other comic on the pages today. I wish kids knew what newspaper are, they would enjoy this. But you look like a person that reads, so do yourself a favor and get this collection.

As a side note, make sure to check which volumes you get, some of them repeat strips.

For slightly introverted kids and grown-ups, this series is wonderful. My oldest child found it on the bookshelf (where I hide good stuff to promote him searching for it) and stole it off to his room, where he giggled manically for an hour.
