Although I have never climbed mountains or trekked in the Himalayas, and am never likely to, I really enjoy experiencing it through the eyes of people who have been there, from the early 20th century pioneers to modern day adventurers. This includes watching documentaries and films, as well as reading memoirs and travelogues, especially during Covid-related travel restrictions - armchair travel is a great way of expanding one's own experiences of the world. Having very much enjoyed Horrell's previous book, "Seven Steps from Snowdon to Everest", which makes it clear that you don't have to be superhuman or a natural climber to take part in such expeditions, and having heard him speak engagingly about Sherpas and Everest politics at the Hawkesbury Upton Literature Festival, I was eager to read this new book, a distillation of some of the best posts on those topics from his blog, which I understand is one of the leading blogs on Everest.
Had I only read the first post in the collection - an intriguing analysis of the impact of alcohol on frostbite risks - I'd have already got my money's worth. His explanation is memorable, and I'm sure I'll be dropping into future conversations when appropriate. I dipped in and out of the rest of the book, reading a little each day, which I find is the best way to read blog post compilation books.
Having very recently watched the two films "Sherpa" and "Project Possible", I really appreciated the balanced and considered viewpoint put forward by Horrell as someone who has effectively been a fly on the wall, physically present at the time of key moments in recent Everest history, including the tragic icefall disaster in 2014. His insights are far more credible and informed than any newspaper report, and in future any time an interesting news story arises in the press, I shall head for Horrell's blog to get his insider viewpoint.
A well-written and thoughtful read, highly recommended for anyone interested in any aspect of Everest, and a great introduction to his blog for anyone who wants to continue to gain insights into Everest online also.
