Update: the float switch stopped "floating" before the week was over...obviously not sealed well. Don't waste your money!
First, the range of travel for the float is too wide. The float on the switch needs to travel to the almost vertical position in order to activate the pump. In my bilge, this is a good 3+ inches of water. If you have a wide bilge, this may amount to significant water weight and could pose a dangerous situation. Secondly the float needs to travel all the way to the bottom of its stroke to turn off. Unfortunately most bilge pumps will not evacuate all of the water in the bilge, rather they leave a quarter inch when the pump loses suction. The 1/4 inch of water will not allow this switch to turn off the pump, it needs to bottom out. You cannot mount this on the same plane as the pump, it needs to be higher.
The switch would work if you have a stepped bilge with a sump that is lower than the height of the switch. You could mount the switch 1/4 inch higher than the pump, which would allow the switch to turn completely off at the end of the pumping cycle. Positioning is critical on this one in order to get successful operation.
I've removed the switch and will probably need to switch to a higher priced, pump/switch combination.
It's cheap, that's why I give it a one star rating (otherwise I would have given zero stars).
