Présentation de l'éditeur
This SHORT HISTORY OF THE WORLD is meant to be read straightforwardly almost as a novel is read. It gives in the most general way an account of our present knowledge of history, shorn of elaborations and complications. It has been amply illustrated and everything has been done to make it vivid and clear. From it the reader should be able to get that general view of history which is so necessary a framework for the study of it particular period or the history of a particular country. It may be found useful as a preparatory excursion before the reading of the author's much fuller and more explicit _Outline of History_ is undertaken. But its especial end is to meet the needs of the busy general reader, too driven to study the maps and time charts of that _Outline_ in detail, who wishes to refresh and repair his faded or fragmentary conceptions of the great adventure of mankind. It is not an abstract or condensation of that former work. Within its aim the _Outline_ admits of no further condensation. This is a much more generalized History, planned and written afresh.
Biographie de l'auteur
H. G. Wells was a professional writer and journalist, who published more than a hundred books, including novels, histories, essays and programmes for world regeneration. Wells's prophetic imagination was first displayed in pioneering works of science fiction, but later he became an apostle of socialism, science and progress. His controversial views on sexual equality and the shape of a truly developed nation remain directly relevant to our world today. He was, in Bertrand Russell's words, 'an important liberator of thought and action'.

Buy a regular copy - not this version
le 16 février 2017 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Based purely on the formatting of the book. Full of poorly copied materials with no regard to page layouts. No pictures but includes the subtitle to the picture which is odd. Some pages even include HTML code as if someone was trying to format it.

Advertised as "Illustrated." But there are two or three illustrations that have no captions and nothing to do with the text. None of the illustrations referenced by the writer / text are in the book. A deliberate deception in my opinion. In order to really understand the book, you need the illustrations.

I can't believe that the Amazon sell this crudely-made copy to its customers and label it as classics version. The book lacks essential figures and what's more terrible it doesn't delete the title and reference of the pictures. So, it is so confused when I was reading the words. Do not buy this one if the Amazon do not update the version.
A truly inspired look at our history thus far.

This is an extremely well written book which takes a look at all of history as a single process, and evokes such a profound appreciation of the facts of history as much as it results in a profound appreciation of the true genius of its author, H. G. Wells, as well as his witty, entertaining, and even amusing writings. I have read this book in bits at a time just while traveling for a couple of years, and now that I've finished it, I can look back on the experience with sincere appreciation and warm affections for it.

A Good Victorian look at History
le 15 mars 2010 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Mr. Welles is one of my all time favorite authors. My parents being a lot smarter than I ever hope to be gave me this book many decades ago. From it, I developed a love of history. While it is a old book and lacks a non eurocentric view it is a good history book none the less. I used it a lot at University and found it to be very useful resource tool. But I would not recommend it for any light reading very soon.
