I have followed the book to the letter. I have installed all the required scripts including their versions. My setup is exactly what is requested from the book and still, nothing runs. My advice... pass on this book. It seems to be rushed into press. It's only 105 pages long and you can get the same info off the Asp.NET website.
I'm pist... I got screwed. Hopefully you won't.
But then what do you do if you want to dive into it in more detail? Buy a book? Not in this case. This book is woefully short, and its examples are similar to the examples on the asp.net web site. It gives no in-depth understanding of SignalR. I think it would only be useful if you have an aversion to reading material on the web. I was interested in the chapter on scaling out SignalR, but I felt that the examples presented stopped way short of giving a full understanding of how scaling works.
Another reason to avoid it is that its examples are based on pre-release or 1.0.0 RC versions of SignalR, which, as of this writing, is already on Version 2. So I suspect a lot of the examples no longer work.
We'll have to wait for a better book on SignalR and on Owin.
a waste of money and time
> Doesn't take long to go through the book
> Easy to follow samples
> Touches most aspects of SignalR
> Lacking in depth on every topic
> Most (only?) suitable for true new-comers to SignalR
I strongly recommend that anyone considering this book go to the Packt Publishing website and read a sample chapter there. The chapter that you'll see there will give you a taste of the way the book is written, and should reveal if this is the book for you.
In summary then, a good quick read as a primer for SignalR
