4.0 étoiles sur 5 I recommend starting with the Brahms Hungarian Dances at the end ... 18 avril 2015
Par Big Bad John - Publié sur
Format: CD
This recording left me muttering to myself...

Then I had a flashback to a day when I came across some of Picasso's early sketches at the Louvre and suddenly I realized the man could really draw, so his later works look as they do because he wanted them that way...

To approach Anne-Sophie Mutter in a similar vein, I recommend starting with the Brahms Hungarian Dances at the end of disk one. You will quickly realize that she can do ANYTHING with her fiddle, so any sounds you don't like elsewhere in this set are the consequences of her conscious election and not due to any technical limitation. Listen again to admire how Lambert Orkis adjusts his accompaniment to her ferociously idiosyncratic phrasing. Anybody who can make this overplayed music sound fresh and interesting, as they do, has my wholehearted approval.

Next, I suggest the Beethoven Sonata #7 at the beginning of disk one. This will sound relatively tame by comparison, and you'll appreciate her sensitive romantic approach to a work that risks turning stale through repetition. Beethoven's adagios have always been among my favorites in his oeuvre, showing the romantic side of his soul that often escapes notice in Wagnerian renditions of his larger works. Mutter brings out this romanticism with exquisite taste and execution.

Skipping over the Brahms Sonata #2, we come to an arresting work for solo violin by Penderecki that could have served as the soundtrack for The Blair Witch Project. None of Mutter's output could serve as background music, but this one requires especially careful attention. Her rendition of the three Kreisler miniatures is similarly striking, though the music itself is almost excessively obliging after the Penderecki.

I had the most trouble liking Mutter's rendition of the Brahms Sonata #2. The second time through was a bit better for me than the first, but I still couldn't get comfortable with the third movement. My impression is that she was trying to depict something heroic with an instrument ill-suited to the purpose. I am left feeling that Brahms was mostly about gemutlichkeit, and who should know better about that than a Rheinlander like Mutter?

Disc two of this set begins with Mozart's Sonata for Piano and Violin in E-flat Major K481. Orkis' playing is an inspiration throughout. In fact, this entire set could be a reference work for how to accompany on the piano. I was more comfortable with Mutter's third movement than the first two: there are many times when I want to grab her by the ears and pull her up on top of the pitch!

André Previn's Sonata for Violin and Piano #2 is a welcome change from much contemporary writing. While innovative, he aims to please rather than to baffle. He has mastered the fine art of sounding familiar without stooping to parody. I plan to restudy this piece and would like to hear other interpretations before making up my mind about this one. Violin students will want to study the variety of effects of which the instrument is capable in this context.

Unfortunately, the rest of this disc is French, and Mutter will never be my favorite exemplar of Gallic charm and wit.

Buy it, but be prepared to struggle with the artist. The lady is not for backgrounding!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 an excellent collection, mixing re-issues and some new material 13 juillet 2015

For some reason, I had avoided recordings by Anne-Sophie Mutter, perhaps because of the DGG hyping of her when she was a teenager in the late Karajan years (the mid-1980s). But this is terrific. Much of the material in the 2-disc set has already appeared, and admirers of Mutter will already have the Beethoven, Brahms, Faure, and Mozart sonatas that form the backbone of the program. There are some new things -- most notably two pieces commissioned by Mutter: a solo sonata by Penderecki and a sonata by Andre Previn. Both are very well played, and the Penderecki piece is attractively quirky and, at about 13 minutes, not too long. It's a theme-and-variations, with a striking pizzicato opening, and you never lose a sense, through the Tempo 1 sections, that the whole thing coheres. The Beethoven and the Brahms pieces are really well done, and the sound is superb. Lambert Orkis is just splendid, and in both sonatas, with their quite distinctive expressive worlds, he and Mutter are remarkably unanimous in their adjustments of dynamic and phrasing. Orkis's opening, before the violin enters, to the second movement of the Beethoven is almost worth the price of these discs, and Mutter's entry thereafter comes like a benediction. It's as lovely an account of this sonata as I've heard. But it's all great, and the fact that you can pick up slight differences in sound, because of the different venues, is not a matter for concern. The "encore" pieces are lovely too. The Massenet "Meditation," some Kreisler ("Schon' Rosmarin" included), and some lively arrangements of Hungarian Dances by Brahms -- Mutter digs in with energy and grace as required. This is an excellent introduction for those who don't know Mutter's work.
