Présentation de l'éditeur

Former private investigator Cèsar Hawke has one rule: He doesn’t deal with dead bodies. That’s why he enlisted with the Magical Violations Department in the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He’s happy tracking down witches that commit petty crimes, but he leaves the homicides to other agents.

Except that he’s been assigned to a new team—a team that handles special investigations—and the job has suddenly changed. Now Cèsar has to deal with dead bodies. He also has to deal with necromancers, murderous cults, and demons that can stop a man’s heart with fear.

This isn’t the job he signed up for, but it’s the job he needs to do.

If he survives the first week.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Lighter Series 8 février 2014

I love SM Reine so I naturally tried this out. The sequel to Witch Hunt, this book doesn't disappoint. Cesar is a witch who works for a paranormal agency fighting the bad guys. His partner is a tough witch named Suzy who suffered a bit of trauma in book one that carries over to this one. We learn more his boss, Fritz and the new squad they are a part of. I really like Izzy the potential love interest who is also desired by Fritz. Triangle anyone? There are some familiar faces in this one if you have read the Descent Series but if you haven't it doesn't detract from this series. This series seem to be a bit lighter than Ms Reine's others which is refreshing. Cesar seems to be laughing at himself at times. The story has demons, witches and werewolves, oh my. Read and enjoy.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Cesar Hawke's life just keeps getting interesting 18 août 2014

Poor Cèsar. His old life was so Normal. Well, if you can call being a Witch employed by the Magical Violations Department of the Office of Preternatural Affairs ‘normal’. His day-to-day life consisted of getting warrants, performing arrests, putting the suspects on trial, and sendng guilty parties back to the Hell from whence they came – of course, with the travel forms filled out in triplicate. Hey, it was a job, right? And then, everything went to Hell. After finding a body in his bathtub in Witch Hunt, the first in the Preternatural Affairs series, Cèsar Hawke was suddenly on the run, desperate to find the real killer and clear his name. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely wasn’t fun . . . especially the whole “the Incubi now have a price on your head” part of the deal. Meh. After dealing with double dealing double agents (with really nasty tempers), vicious demons and various and sundry other nasties, a few Incubi shouldn’t be that big of a deal . . . should it?

Uh, well, maybe?

Now he is part of a special task force, made up of his old partner from Magical Violations, Agent Suzy Takeuchi, whose magical curses are only slightly less impressive than her verbal curses; Isobel Stonecrow, a necrocognitive who raises ghosts and speaks with the dead; and Fritz Friederling, the brains and money behind the task force. A very secretive and possibly illegal task force now based in Reno Nevada, away from the LA basin and the Incubi who are intent on taking Cèsar down for spoiling a very lucrative bit of fun for them. Ah well, can’t please everyone all the time.

Following up on an infernal energy event in Reno, Cèsar meets with a confidential informant, Connie, in an abandoned building, only to have Connie commit suicide right in front of him. Who could know that a demon would be so afraid of a simple daddy longlegs? I suppose when you are a Daimarachnid, a truly horrifying spider demon under your skin suit, and you have a lot to hide, it isn’t all that surprising that that simple daddy longlegs could have been a spy for the mother of all spider demons. Well, if there really is a mother of all spider demons out there somewhere!

Oy. Can things get any worse? Oh, yeah, baby. Much. Much. Worse. Walking nightmares are bad enough, but throw in a demon overlord and various and sundry goblins and goulies and monstrosities (Oh, My!) an abandoned mine filled with spiders the size of eight-legged ponies, zombies werewolves and ethereal ruins, and you have a recipe for many a sleepless night. Oh. And let’s not forget the new price on Cèsar’s head, courtesy of his bosses boss. Can just one thing go right for Cèsar? Just one?? He will take a tiny, small little thing. Really.

Cèsar’s life just gets more and more interesting, in a very Chinese May you live in interesting times sort of way. Many of the cast from Witch Hunt make repeat appearances in this new edition, along with several new characters whom I expect to see more of in the future. And there is at least one shock that I never even saw coming, something that may change Cèsar’s life even more. I look forward to Hotter Than Helltown, the next in the series. Hope you enjoy this series as much as I am enjoying it!

I received Silver Bullet from the author in exchange for a realistic review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Reading the Paranormal Review 20 février 2014

I have my crazy eyes out. My good crazy eyes. The ones that are afraid for Cèsar and Suzy and their newly formed crew. Because, let's face it, the corruption they're starting to see in OPA and the Union runs deep and things are going to get very interesting.

And the shenanigans Cèsar finds himself in at the end of the book? I AM AFEARED.

Having read all the other books set in the universe (not a requirement, mind you, but it will add an extra layer to everything Cèsar encounters), I LOVED seeing some of the places and people we meet later on. Unexpected allies, people who we love to hate, and dark magic made this a virtual cornucopia of delights. Added bonus, we get to see Reno before Elise is unleashed upon it. Which means it's, you know, still standing.

But let's get back to Cèsar and his crew. Suzy's a mess after being held in a Union detention center in book 1, Isobel seems upfront about what she is and can do but I'm WARY, and Fritz has secrets. Quite a few secrets, from the looks of things. And Cèsar... Cèsar doesn't seem like he's cut out for a life of eviscerating demons and having to kill when the situation calls for it, yet he's smack dab in the middle of just that.

They team is messy and haven't quite found their groove together but they do manage to get things done. And what they're uncovering... well, we'll see plenty more of it, I imagine.

A very fun, every so slightly bloody (I'm lying, there's a fair amount of blood -- some demon, some not) follow up to book 1. As a prequel to the Elise/James/Rylie universe, it made me giddy. I just love how dark and gritty this world is as a whole. Seeing it before it reaches maximum devastation is brilliant and makes me happy.

This series must be read in order. The first book is Witch Hunt. This is the second book.

Cèsar has just recently realized how far above his head he is in it with this job of his... Or has he? After avoiding a frame job and clearing his name you would think he'd at least get a week off to rest and recuperate ... But that is not the way the world works for OPA agents. Especially when said OPA agents are now part of a top secret covert team answerable only to their direct boss. What are they up against? Why all the secrecy? And why are they headed to Vegas of all places?!

This is an amazingly fast paced action/adventure/mystery/paranormal/thriller/ suspense series that always keeps you guessing! Who really are your allies? Friends? Enemies? Can you even trust yourself? Each book gets better as you delve farther into their world and uncover more and more layers of corruption :) I can't wait to read the next one Hotter Than Helltown!!!

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a lot of supernatural mayhem in their thriller/mysteries ... Along with a dash or two of romance :D

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Profanity and vulgarity a turnoff 27 décembre 2015

The book was narrated in the first person. With the excessive profanity and vulgarity in the first two paragraphs alone, by the main character, I realized that this was not going to be an interesting need. I always wonder why writers think that this will attract readers. But judging from the reviews here, I'm a dying breed. Some did protest the language, but not many.
Note to self: read reviews before downloading to device. Doing so this time would have saved me a few minutes of disgust.
Good thing it was free. No guilt in deleting it.
