This family guide combines the talents of Klaus Malling Olsen and Hans Larsson of Gulls of North America, Europe and Asia and Terns of Europe and North America. All seven members of the family are well represented and covered in detailed text, photographs and artwork.

The introduction covers the overview of the family with text on taxonomy, relationships and characteristics, breeding behavior, age development, Skuas and man, observing Skuas in the field and a explanation of the species accounts. As with gulls each member of this family has several cycles and moults and the explanation of this in the age development section gives you a good grounding on this. The “observing Skuas in the field” section has some Skua topography illustrated as well to show you the key features and terms used to describe them.

There are thirteen plates with some very nice artwork showing many of the many moults and plumages of each of the species, all are illustrated in resting and flight views with explanations of each plumage on the facing page. There is also a single plate of juvenile Stercorarius Skuas at rest and one for juvenile northern Skuas in flight.

The systematic section covers each of the species in great detail starting with field identification with adult, juvenile and first winter plumages. There is little on voice as would be expected with this family is unmusical at best and rely mostly on screams and cries on the breeding grounds and remain mostly silent away from breeding grounds. Moult is covered generously with all of the different moults covered. Following this is a detailed description of the adult plumages like alternate and basic as well as juvenile, second summer, first winter, variants et…The is information on geographical variation and measurements, weight, food breeding and migration and wintering ranges. Each species is covered with an extensive range map as well.

Following the systematic section there are eight pages of photographs illustrating many of the plumages and species covered in the book.

This can be a difficult family to identify to species even when in adult breeding plumage as in the Catharacta genus of Skuas but this guide will help you as it did me when a stray Long-tailed Skua flew over me in Tennessee on its way south after being blown inland by a storm. A must for any ornithological library.
