Despite the fact that the story was not that surprising, it's really hard not to stay stuck to it

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another Read in a Day 10 février 2014

This latest addition had me picking up speed with reading it as I raced through some passages too caught up in wanting to know what happened next, to who survived and didn't. I found that sometimes I would quickly read through a battle, see who survived and then went back for a slower read to drink in all the lovely details that this author keeps placing in his books. It was surprising to see who didn't make it through the book, some that have been around a very long time. It just shows how the author created characters to care for during the series and how involved one could get with them.

There were my favorites, Streth, Ariel, Clarissa, Jeremy and the gang of five as well as others that gave a sense of connection and continuity, more so than the random fighter pilot introduced in one paragraph only to die a paragraph later. I think the threat to the long time characters was more intense. I found that oddly enough, I was more concerned with Clarissa's survival than Amanda's.

There were sacrifices, tragic losses, surprise victories and turn overs to keep the pace up, but not too fast, from beginning to end. With exciting battles, meeting of interesting allies, and unveiling a little more of the setting.

Also I've been meaning to mention this for books now, but any, like me, who are space settlement enthusiast, this setting has some wonderful inclusions of orbital habitats. Its by no means a central part of the story, but its nice to see in any sci-fi setting's background.

All in all, another book where I intended on a few pages today and more tomorrow, and ended up putting aside everything else to finish reading the latest book in a day.

There were a bit too many losses to call it my favorite of the series, I think, so far, book four remains my favorite one, but this one was certainly the most epic of the series to date. I look forward to more in this series (and hopefully the return of one particular character left with a doubtful question mark, one of my two favorite characters...hope springs eternal and all).

The only problem with finishing it in a day means a longer wait until the next book, but very glad there are plans for more books.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice Continuation of the Series 25 août 2015

Please note this is the fourth installment of a longer series: if you haven’t read the first three books, this one won’t make much sense to you. If you enjoy a good science fiction series with a military bent, I would highly recommend this series and reading it in chronological order vs. series numerical order as follows:

The Slaver Wars: Alien Contact
Moon Wreck (The Slaver Wars Book 1)
The Slaver Wars: First Strike
The Slaver Wars: Retaliation
The Slaver Wars: Galactic Conflict
The Slaver Wars: Endgame

The action picks up right where it left off in the last installment and I am hooked. The technology is something you can wrap your arms around, and you really get into the head of his characters and it makes you feel as if you are right there in the middle of the action. I originally picked this up for $3.99 and I certainly received more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value and read each of these titles as fast as I could – I’m ready to read more from Mr. Weil.

Wow! What a great series! I think I said that before but I’ll probably repeat that in every review because it is a great series. In this book we’re waiting on the Hocklyn’s and their masters, the AIs, to come and take away a forward operating base that we originally took from them. We know that battle is going to be really, really tough and we don’t know how many AI ships will be in the new fleet. Admiral Streth has a plan for the defense of this planet but his primary objective is to get the fight taken back to New Providence so the Federation of Humans can apply their full might against a combined Hocklyn/AI fleet. It’s felt that, at New Providence, we might have a chance if the AIs don’t send an unreasonable fleet against the Federation.

The humans are astounding the Hocklyns by attacking and destroying AI ships. That has never been done in the history of the Hocklyn civilization. They have been directed by the AIs to gather up a huge armada that will completely wipe out the humans at the forward operations base and then follow them all the way back to their home worlds. It is a battle of genocide! The space fighting is really fast paced and described in pretty good detail. I’m particularly pleased that the author has given us the alien side of this war as well as the human. It is interesting to read what the aliens are thinking about during these battles.

I don’t know Admiral Streth expects to defeat the Hocklyns especially given that the Hocklyns have a fleet that measures in the thousands of ships. Most humans fleets number in the 100 to 200 ships including support vessels. It has also taken a lot of firepower just to defeat one single AI ship. How will the Federation stand up to 10 AI ships in one single battle?

The Federation needs help but all of it’s allies are smaller civilizations that can’t provide much in support of the Federation military effort. There is even one ally that has now refused to even discuss becoming involved in this war with the Hocklyns and AIs. I wonder why they have taken such a stand?

You will be surprised what is revealed in this book. There are a lot of things that are not as they seem. The Federation will need help because the AI fleet is much, much larger than anyone every expected and know one in the Federation has a clue.

Continue reading this series. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Thrilling Story and Series! 20 octobre 2016

From My Goodreads Review Number 67:

This review is on The Slaver Wars: Retaliation, which is Book Five of The Slaver Wars series by Raymond L. Weil. This story was well worth the wait.

The Human Federation of Worlds is on the offensive against the Hocklyns and their Master AIs. The Federation has freed some of the Hocklyn slave worlds and destroyed several enemy bases. The Hocklyns on the other hand have been busy building a massive enemy fleet to track down and destroy the Human Federation warships, find their home worlds and destroy them as well. This war has been building to a climax for over 400 years now. When these two warship fleets meet, it will be a battle to the death.

The Human Federation has struggled for centuries to rebuild their civilization since the first Hocklyn invasion that destroyed their home worlds four centuries ago. Several of the main characters in this story were put into cryosleep in order to be re-awakened in time to fight the Hocklyns in a final battle for survival. The descendants of the original Federation colonies have been preparing for war ever since their home worlds were destroyed. The time for battle has arrived.

Several story lines exist in this series of battles between the Human Federation of allies and the four alien races that rule other slave worlds under control of the Masters, which have not yet been played out. The Hocklyns are only one of four enemy races under control of the Masters that must be defeated if humans hope to survive extermination. Even if the Hocklyns are defeated, the struggle will continue.

I give this book five stars because the story reaches a thrilling climax and the characters involved are all well rounded and believable. The human (and alien) emotions that result from the battles add the additional element many military science fiction stories lack that make this book a satisfying read. It is even more enjoyable to know that this book will not be the last story in the series since the final battles must be with the truly terrifying Masters who rule the center of the galaxy. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic twist, had to read it in one sitting; I couldn't put it down. 8 février 2014

I have immensely enjoyed the 'Slaver Wars' series since I first discovered it about a year ago.
It's books like this that prove to me just how fantastic the ebook concept is. This book had only finished being written a week ago and yet already I've read it and eagerly awaiting the next in the series, all for less than the price I'd pay to hire a DVD, and not too much more than a coffee.
There is more character development and we get to know some of the species better. I enjoyed reading more about the races that have allied themselves with the federation, we hadn't seen as much of the allied races in the previous book.
There's the sad passing of a character who's played a big part in the series and another twist that I just hadn't seen coming. All these just kept me turning page after page after page.
PLENTY of great space battles too.
I couldn't put it down, from the moment I downloaded it I just sat and read nonstop. Thanks again and I really look forward to the next novel in the series, I hope you've already started it!
