Présentation de l'éditeur

From USA Today bestselling author Megg Jensen...

An adoptee raised in a foreign land, sixteen-year-old Lianne was content with her life as handmaiden to the queen, until a spell cast on her at birth activated. Now she's filled with uncontrollable rage and access to magic she thought had been bled from her people years ago. Even her years of secret training in elite hand-to-hand combat and meditation can’t calm the fires raging inside her.

Her heart is torn between two boys, the one she’s always loved and the one who always ignored her. But when the kingdom threatens to tear itself apart due to rumors surrounding the queen’s alleged affair, who will Lianne protect and who will she destroy?

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Horrible Characterization 22 février 2013

Why lie, I thought this book would be interesting, instead the characters have shallow motivations. The main character is of course dually gifted with magic and weaponry and has the love of two male characters (at least, supposedly). She is also meant to be a "warrior". In truth, she is the least likable "action girl" I've ever met: whiny, self-centered, attracted to jerkish men, and prone to oversimplification of things. Much like the author, who does this with absolutely everything.

In my book, if a teenage warrior girl is to be taken seriously, she could stop thinking about her love interests and her love life for a moment. Also, the villains were thinly developed, evil step(adopted)-sister, evil king, (SPOILER) evil ex...all with no motivation or pretext besides stopping the prowess of all that is good and noble in this world (those scumbags!). Trust me...to read this book takes no understanding of the human psyche, you know from somewhere in the beginning that these people are evil. No second guessing.

Maybe it's just because I like real characterization, with development and understanding behind them. But I didn't like this book and would never recommend it to anyone.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A decent fantasy with a healthy dose of romance 20 août 2015

Two kingdoms fought a war and one lost - one of the fighters always does. Three kids from the loser side were taken to be raised in the royal court as a sign of peace between two nations. Lianne - the main heroine - is one of these kids. She grew up to be a handmaiden to the queen of victors. She was in love with a boy (another one of the trio) while all but ignoring the last taken boy who happened to be somewhat handicapped as a result of an accident.

Nothing out of the ordinary keeps happening until Lianne was about to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. At this point her whole world came crashing down, literally. She is forced to reevaluate her whole life, among other lesser things.

I read this book during the period of my infatuation with indie and self-published fantasy. This one was not too bad actually. Surely it is quite heavy on romance side. On the other hand this was done in such a way that I realized that the romance was taking too much plot time only when I finished reading.

As a fantasy romance (please do not mix this with paranormal romance which is a completely different beast) it does have quite a few of the standard tropes including heroine's angst. Once again it was not over the top and quite bearable.

It was still more or less standard fair until the BIG plot twist came up. This one was completely unexpected and took me by surprise. I do not need to tell you that as a result of said twist the book ends in a cliffhanger and nothing whatsoever gets resolved, but I still seriously considered giving this book 3.5 star rating; the impossibility to use half stars on GoodReads and Amazon was one of the major reasons I did not.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 who are you and what is your life supposed to be? 26 juin 2014

The sleepers, is a story about 3 young kids forced to live in a place they know nothing about and are complete outcasts in to keep peace between their countries. Adopted when they were too young to remember anything at all by people who hated their kind, even though they were hated they were still taken care of by the adoptive families to a point. Lianne, Kellan and Bryden the main characters of the story are the only 3 adoptees from Dalagan. As they each reach their 16th birthdays their lives will change forever. The questions is where do they call home and who is being truthful about anything? This is a very good read about people’s lives and how they interact with each other and how easily we can be fooled by others.

This is a very unique story. I love how three children were chosen from their homeland to be adopted by their conquering foes to be raised as their own as a peace offering. Lianne, Kellan & Bryden adopted by different residents of Fithia.

Kellan learned combat skills from his adoptive father, Aric, who also trained the palace army. Bryden injured at age five and left him with a limp, was book smart and had done bookkeeping for the residents of Fithia. Lianne, was a servant girl to the Queen, Mags, and helped to take care of Mags and her newborn son, Trevin.

Although, you don't get to know Kellan and Bryden as much as you would like, you do discover that Lianne has a heart and you're torn along with her when she discovers her secretive best friend, the Queen will be executed for her infidelity.
This book has several twists and turns which keep your interests going till the end, although some I may have seen coming, others I certainly did not.

This is the first book I have read from Megg Jensen and it certainly will not be the last!

A wonderful and inspiring series on par with Megg Jensen's other series "The Cloud Prophet trilogy". Just like the rest of Megg's book, the human and relateable characters, unique worlds, and beautifully detailed story captivates you, drags you in, draws you under and completely immerses you in a fantasy land you never want to leave, leaving you breathless and wanting more. I cannot honestly wait to pick up the rest of the books!
