What happens when a desperate fugitive hides out in a department store owned by a psychopath?

A Smaller Hell is a darkly-comic tale of collisions between the normal and the perverted; the workaday and the surreal; the logical and the absurd; and of course, good and evil. This neo-noir thriller will keep you guessing as Black negotiates his way through the snowdrifted alleys of this once-splendid shipbuilding town, right up until the shocking climax at the Christmas party.

This adventure was inspired by Franz Kafka, three stripes, J.G. Ballard, cheap cider, Iain Banks, sovereign rings, Rockports, Dennis Lehane, greasy spoon cafes, street violence, spit and sawdust boxing clubs, working in a fancy department store at Christmas, psychopathy, Irvine Welsh, Iain Banks, true love, nymphomaniacs, consumerism, Martin Amis, Aldous Huxley, corporatocracy, hierarchy, cruelty and the stickiest, smokiest, most dangerous pubs known to mankind.

Disclaimer: I only made it about 50 pages in. I just hated it. Most likely I didn't even get to the main storyline. Maybe it would get better, but I plan to move on to another book now.

So, I've read about 50 pages or so, and I still don't know if the protagonist is a man or a woman. Maybe that's OK. But somehow I don't get the feeling that this is part of the plot or plan. I just think of it as bad writing. It certainly FEELS like it is a man. I think the synopsis uses the word "he" or "his" or something like that. Yet.. in the opening pages this character is wearing a wig and some high heels. Gay? Cross Dresser? OK. That wouldn't make me dislike the book or downvote it. But again, it just doesn't come off as if this is part of the plot or storyline. Just bad writing. Like I've missed something.

The book stumbles from event to event with no continuity. Example (SPOILER COMES NEXT): Main character is in a bar, gets in a fight, abused by the police, gets away. OK. fine... Decides he can't "go home" and two sentences later he's started a new life. Can't get a job. Moves to a new town. Something. Just "matter of fact." I gave up here...

A Smaller Hell..the story of a man, Tony Black, who has lost his way in life. A story full of sadness, loss, degradation, yet also happiness, joy, and love. When Tony "by chance" meets Rachel at a job interview with Ms. Doyle, his already complicated life becomes even more complicated and twisted. This story had so many twists and turns it was sometimes hard to keep up. Ms Doyle, a twisted and sometimes seemingly evil woman has more surprises in store for Tony and Rachel than they would ever believe. Honestly, the book wasn't what I thought it was going to be, it was actually better. Remember, nothing is ever what it seems.

I loved this story. It literally gave me goose bumps and still does when I tell friends about it. I can't recall a time when after reading only a single chapter of a book I felt the need to turn on every light in the house to fix myself a drink. This was one story I just had to read in one go. First time reading from this author and certainly won't be the last, what a thrilling and suspenseful ride this was. The author does an amazing job of letting you step into the shoes of Tony Black, make you feel his pain and take you along for a ride you won't quickly forget. I don't want to spoil it for anyone I just know that this book is definitely up there with the greats. Kudos to the author for delivering such an awesome read :)

Beautifully written with rich imagery; the atmosphere is surreal but tense. Tony Black is in hiding and will take work wherever he can, even if he's warned to stay away from Tanner's Department Store over and over again. Tony soon begins to see how completely Ms Doyle controls her employees, and how cruelly she exploits them. She is the tyrant of Tanner's, she has four police officers under her thumb, and she always gets what she wants...or else.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting settings, but characters not quite 3D 12 septembre 2014

I enjoyed this book at times, but had to force myself through it at others. It was confusing at times as to who certain characters were (unless that was because I was reading while tired when they introduced the characters. It was a weird premise, but pretty unique, which can be good. I didn't really feel like the main characters were as flushed out as I would have liked, but the settings were well-described and interesting.
