This is my first step into the smart phone arena so the Alcatel One Touch Idol touted as an entry level Android 4.1 Jelly Bean smartphone is perfect for me.
The first thing I notice was it's size, a 4.7 inch bright (even in sunlight), crisp screen with saturated colors that delight me, it's also really light (3.9 oz), and one of the slimmest smart phones, when I don't feel like carrying a purse I put it in my back pocket and forget about it until I desperately need it for pictures or seeing where the missing members of the group are, it's even splash resistant...I haven't put that to the test but I like the idea.
As a phone it works great, even the external speaker. It's comfortable to hold and although it's case is made out of hard plastic I have the model with the brushed metal finish and it looks much higher end. For messaging it's fabulous because it can tell when I misspell words and almost always picks out the correct word to replace it with.
It has a front 2 megapixel camera and the rear 8 megapixel camera, what I've noticed so far is that it's great at close up details but a bit noisy for panoramic shots but it's still the best camera I've had on a phone.
One of the things I like best is using the landscape mode for reading...makes much more since than portrait mode, plus the text is sharp and crisp so I use it more than I thought I would.
I also like some of the gesture features, like locking the screen when I cover it with my hand or muting an incoming call by tipping the phone over.
The phone feels fast to me, I'm able to scroll rapidly through menus or opening apps, I don't notice any lag time.
Some of the negatives: it's 3G only, this doesn't bother me, I'm much more interested in it being unlocked for traveling. The memory card slots don't feel really solid, so I'm glad I'm not one of those people who change their cards often. The only thing I really don't like is that the case can't be opened, so when the battery is dead you have to get a new phone, granted at the rate these phones and applications advance I'll probably want a new one by the time my battery dies anyway.
So, in the end, I have to say this is a totally MAG smart phone. I like that it's about 1/2 the cost of the higher end phones but looks every bit as good. I consider myself a pretty normal user of electronics and this smart phone is probably more than I need.
Just as an additional thought many of my family members have the high end phones and aren't new to using them, I already do more with my phone, they paid all that money and have all those features but what's the point if you don't use them.
