I wanted this particular book because my grandmother had illustrated it, I used to have a copy of it, as a small child. Mrs. Mccarty passed away in 1978, and there were only two sellers of this book, the one I chose had the most reasonable price, I found the book in PERFECT condition, and it arrived in acceptable time, with no damage at all, and I would like to thank whoever made this very sentimental book available to me in such good condition at such a cheap price. :)

"Thanks Audible for my Christmas present!"

Hans Christian Andersen was one of my favorite authors growing up. I loved his Ugly Duckling and Little Mermaid stories. The story of the Snow Queen is another top notch tale.

We all know "Frozen" was based on this story, but only in the fact that there was a Snow Queen in it. This story is more like the old animated tale with Sandra Dee's voice as Gerda searching for her best boy friend Kai who after getting a shard of magic glass in his eye and heart runs off with the Snow Queen. Every day he is with the Queen he becomes deader to reality and the possibility of happiness. Can Gerda save him with her love?

As Gerda makes her way towards the Snow Queens castle she has many adventures and makes more friends, my favorite is the Little Robber Girl who wants Gerda to live with her and be her friend but finally lets her go on her quest to save Kai.

This is a lovely story and a wonderful read by Julia Whelan.

Thanks, Audible!

I decided to enjoy a free audiobook available to me on audible and listened to this in a couple of days worth of quilting while the snow was falling.

This is actually a very spiritual Christian type of story that I didn't think it would be at all. I was very surprised and enjoyed it.

It is about having love for others and seeking out friendship and warming people with your heart when coldness is all around, really. A boy goes out and is very much controlled by the cold Snow Queen who has a heart of ice. the boy's friend Gerda who goes on a long journey to find him and help him escape the Snow Queen.

Well narrated! I enjoyed it. Definitely made my quilting enjoyable.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Classic Fairy Tale Comes to Life in the Beautiful Audio Story 17 avril 2015

Sometimes one needs to step back from the writings of contemporary authors and even from that of books meant for adults and take up a children's classic to be enchanted all over again by a familiar story. My last encounter with The Snow Queen was a well-done community theater production over twenty years ago. This is why when Audible graciously offered a free copy to its members as a Christmas present, I eagerly accepted. I love fairytales even this many years later as an adult so I happily played this short, but engaging piece.

The story is told unembellished just as I remember from an old childhood book of Hans Christian Anderson's fairytales. There are a few versions, but this one was the most familiar to me. I loved this because it is a golden story that can stand on its own. The little boy running off with the Snow Queen, the little girl setting out on her quest to find her friend and her adventures along the way and finally the ending tying in the whole point of the story.

I am new to audio books so I am still finding my way when it comes to narrators, but I have to say that Julie Whelan deserves all those accolades she was awarded as a star narrator. Her golden storytelling was just right for this story. I loved how she made each character come alive and made each change in pace and scene happen in my imagination. I will definitely be looking for more books that she narrated.

All in all, it was a pleasant journey back to childhood with this timeless fairytale and I'm grateful for the gift of it.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Well done reading of the original Snow Queen tale. 27 mars 2015
Par Karissa Eckert - Publié sur Amazon.com
I got this audiobook for free as part of Audible’s Christmas giveaway. I had never actually listened to the original tale of The Snow Queen and ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

When a nasty gremlin takes an evil mirror into the heavens it shatters into a million pieces. One of the pieces, small as a grain of sand, falls into the eye of a young boy. The young boy grows cruel and is eventually snared by the Snow Queen. Meanwhile his best friend Gerta goes on a magical quest to find and save the young boy.

This was a well done reading of this Hans Christian Anderson tale. The narrator does a wonderful job with voices and narration and it was a joy to listen to.

I have read a number of Snow Queen retellings, but have never read the original tale. It was interesting to finally read the source for all of those retellings. There is a lot of magic and adventure in this tale and I think it is something readers of all ages will enjoy.

Overall this was a short, yet very well done listen. I would recommend if you are interested in listening to the original tale of The Snow Queen. If you are interesting in reading a wonderful retelling of The Snow Queen I would recommend Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu or Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee.
