Présentation de l'éditeur

Straight-edge has persisted as a drug-free, hardcore punk subculture for 25 years. Its political legacy remains ambiguous and misrepresented as a Puritan conservatism. However, as this study shows, the history is more complex. Since its origins in 1980s the scene has been linked to radical thought and music. Tracing this history, the book includes contributions from famed straight edge rockers like Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Mark Anderson (Dance of Days) and Andy Hurley (Fall Out Boy) and numerous other activists dedicated to a sober, liberated world.

In almost every oppressed community, whether you're talking about a gay ghetto, a Native American reservation, a white trailer park community, a black inner-city neighborhood, or a Chicano barrio, you will find problems with substance abuse, as drugs and alcohol are effective weapons used by the ruling-class to depoliticize the poor and to neutralize popular dissent. Obviously, if you are drunk or stoned, you are in no condition to fight the system. As such, if you are serious about making revolutionary social change, it only makes sense to become straight-edge. Besides, if you're opposed to multinational corporations that endanger public health and destroy the environment, how can you justify supporting alcohol and tobacco companies, not to mention the illicit drug trade which is responsible for so much suffering in Latin America and around the world? Just look at the drug wars in Mexico and Colombia. Written by straight-edge anarchists, "Sober Living For The Revolution" is a brilliant anthology which explains why sobriety is necessary for our collective liberation. As a feminist and queer, I especially enjoyed the essays discussing straight-edge feminism and the queer-edge movement. Unlike so many books on the straight-edge subculture, this anthology thankfully does not include any Christian fundamentalist or Hare Krishna nonsense, as it is geared entirely toward a secular, radical left, straight-edge audience. My favorite book on the straight-edge movement, I encourage every activist to read and discuss it and to choose sobriety for the revolution!

Sober living for the Revolution is an awesome book, more than just the usual war stories and pictures book. The only drawback is when some of the authors/essayists get too out there with the wordplay, meaning yes it's good to have a diverse vocabulary but some of us aren't as familiar with the classics as others, ya know? I'm a pretty well read guy but some of the writings were tough to get through. Over all though a must-read for anyone who thinks Straight Edge should be more than just merch sales and finger pointing.

When I first bought this book, I expected it to be a history of straight edge written by one author. Instead, I received a collection of interviews and essays from characters within the straight edge scene. I'm not complaining, only describing what you can expect if you purchase this book.

The book is divided into five sections: bands, scenes, manifestos, reflections, and perspectives. The author makes an explicit effort to focus on the international straight edge scenes in places such as Sweden, Israel, and Brazil. The interview with Ian MacKaye was interesting partly because he is such as well spoken and articulate guy. Then, near the end, Kuhn includes a series of essays and interviews covering the feminist and queer straight edge scenes, which I thought was a little bit off the beaten path but interesting nonetheless.

Made me open my mind to a variety of different social cultures. I denounced my straight edge views when the scene was getting too violent and pointless. I understand what being straight edge is like and this book really describes not just straight edge but a lot of other cultures that go along with it.
