There are a lot of social media books out there; I've read a good number of them - some are excellent and very informative, but too many just regurgitate much of the same old stuff that you see everywhere.

Dionne Kasian-Lew's The Social Executive sits in the 'excellent and very informative' pile: It combines intellectual depth with practical examples and case studies. Importantly, it manages to paint a broad picture of the ramifications for doing business in today's 'connected economy' without losing sight of the need to provide 'in-the-trenches' how-to tips and advice. It's this combination - setting the scene and then providing the know-how - that makes this book a must-read for executives everywhere.

Where Dionne's book differs from many others in the genre is that it's aimed fairly and squarely at senior executives, with a nod towards the 'C' Suite. In my experience, professional executives can often be quite dismissive of social media and the role it plays in business today. If that is you, you are the target market for this book: Ignore it at your peril!

I just loved this.

As a Business Coach I'm passionate about social media, but this gives a professional context that is very useful.

First of all, it blows the myths about social media out of the water. I still hear people talking about social media as if it's a new fad when it's actually absolutely necessary to the bottom line. And there's so much data in the book to show that I think it will put people's minds at ease that Social Media is not going away anytime soon and is necessary to build your business.

Obviously, Social media is a powerful business tool. Those of us who are on the platforms don't need convincing, We see the connections that develop, we understand the synergies. But you've got to be there to see that and that's been one of the biggest hurdles, getting decision-makers to get onboard in the first place. This book really addresses their fears directly and takes removes those obstacles. As a coach, getting my clients' to remove obstacles is the first step towards higher success.

Now for the thing that I love the most about this book: It shows you HOW TO DO IT. People have so little time and they want someone to show them how to pull it all together. Otherwise it's overwhelming.

In a nutshell, the book tells us: As professionals, you have very little time, you need to be on social media and why, and here's a simple formula you can follow every day that will manage it for you. So valuable.

I’ve been following Dionne Kasian-Lew’s lively and informative blogs for some time and have been waiting for her to publish in book form. Like her blogs, The Social Executive is well written, fast paced and engaging, which makes a refreshing change for a business book.

Dionne makes a compelling case for the importance of social media in business, professional networking and life more generally, and shows how to use it effectively. I already use Twitter and Facebook, and understand how these platforms are powerful for forming and staying in connection. But now I see more clearly the value of these platforms in a professional sense as well, encouraging me to expand my social media presence.

The chapter on online learning signposts a range of interesting options with tertiary institutions. More generally, I've learned that the potential in global collaboration is enormous.
