Once again, Mark Schaefer hits a home run!

Full disclosure to start. I have used Mark Schaefer's books with both my business clients and with my university students for the past 3 years (I teach social media marketing courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) . I'm a big fan of his work and of him.

Why am a such a big fan?

I believe the purpose of education isn't knowledge, it's action. And reading Mark's books, it's clear he subscribes to this philosophy as well. While you will learn from his books, he pushes you to act on what you learn. He helps readers get up to speed quickly by cutting out the clutter and focusing on core "need to know" information.

Just like with the Tao of Twitter, it's clear when you read Social Media Explained, that Mark is both an acclaimed educator and practitioner. Mark is able to distill research and theory into easy-to-understand and ACTIONABLE advice. He knows those in leadership positions don't have time to experiment with social media. So he gives advice and tips that are perfect for busy leaders, executives, professionals and practitioners who need to understand what social means for business and what to do with social. And, in Social Media Explained, he guides you, step-by-step through the process of moving forward with confidence.

Regarding this book, what I find particularly valuable is the structure. Like you, I'm business and I appreciate a clear, easy-to-follow outline.

Social Media Explained is divided into 4 sections. The first sections cover how social media works in business and which questions and objections you might face when putting together social media initiatives. Then Mark shares a case study that shows his concepts in action. For those readers who feel like they need a social media 101, he provides great, practical descriptions of the major social media platforms in use today.

One other feature I really appreciate about the book is each chapter ends with "Questions leaders need to consider". I love this. It's like having Mark sitting with you and asking you the KEY questions that need to be answered as you move forward.

Will this book make you a social media expert? No, there isn't one book that can do that. But what this book can do better than any other book on the market is help you get up to speed quickly so you can get your organization and team moving forward with confidence.

This book is a short, illustrative, and to the point primer that answers all of the first few questions almost every business owner, manager, or executive has before they use social media to help grow their business.

What is the ROI of social media (hint: That's the wrong question)? It's covered in detail in section 2. What media tools do I start with? In section 3, all different types of social media tools are covered.

It is NOT written for a social media consultant.

It IS written directly for managers, executives, business owners etc... and it is the first book I would recommend you read on the topic of considering social media.

Whether you're a CEO or an individual that is required to manage the social media marketing campaigns for a company, this book is for you. Mark puts his extensive knowledge about social media in this tiny, quick read. From what you need to know, to questions that you need to face with marketing, to guide into each of these major platforms. My personal favorite is the chapter about the ROI of Social Media. As a social media consultant, I often receive questions about limited resources and where to focus our efforts from small business owners and Mark addresses these concerns very clearly. I really enjoy the real world case studies from large companies. Hope you enjoy this quick two hour read as much as I did.

This is the fourth book of Mark Schaefer.

I have read and enjoyed his 3 previous books, and I learned a lot reading them.

But perhaps "Social Media Explained" is the Mark Schaefer's book that I have liked most, because it explains real and practical cases of companies that have achieved real economic benefits after implementing social media strategies in a successful way.

The book is aimed to provide guidance to managers who are still hesitating about whether or not launching their business to the world of the social web.

The fantastic thing about this book is that Mark Schaefer makes us asking ourselves a lot of questions before taking any option or launching any kind of strategy.

Highly recommended.

My first Mark Schaefer book and I thought it was pretty good at explaining the basics of social media, especially for someone that is just learning how to use it for marketing my small business. This new era of social media and marketing can be confusing with all the constant changes. The old way of doing things doesn't work anymore and by breaking things down in simple explanations, I found it very helpful. Mark Schaefer uses case studies to back up his info and shares his own stories too.
