Présentation de l'éditeur

Who is really on the other end of that Facebook friend request, or behind that dating profile, or posting that item for sale on Craigslist? How can you be safe if you plan to meet up with a stranger you met online? What precautions should you take? Facebook, Craigslist, MySpace, chat rooms, dating sites—it does not matter where you are online; killers are lurking in the shadows. They visit suicide chat rooms, search for escorts on Craigslist, and create fake social media profiles to fool and gain the trust of their victims. Someone you have been talking to for months, or even years, could be a completely different person from what you envisioned.

In July of 2009, twenty-one-year-old Heather Snively logged onto Craigslist in search of used baby clothes and toys. She was eight months pregnant with her first child and so excited to marry her fiancé and start their family. She never imagined the woman she contacted on the site had plans to murder her in cold blood and rip the baby from her womb. In 2010, eighteen-year-old Nona Belomesoff met a young man on Facebook and thought she had made a new friend and connection to her dream job. Little did she know that this man had been studying her every move through social media to gain her trust and ultimately take her life. Stories like this happen every day.

In this book, we've detailed chilling true stories of killers that have used the internet to locate, stalk, lure, or exploit their victims.

"An exceptional book covering a range of sections, including; internet serial criminals, Law Enforcement and how they snag these criminals, and social media safety. This book will certainly make you more vigilant in your internet activities." -- (Crime Magazine)

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Striking Book That Certainly Gave Me Pause 21 octobre 2016

Book leaves me shaking my head just thinking about all the sickos out there. Examples like "Harv the Hammer", Armin the cannibal, and Lisa Marie Montgomery's giving of a lethal c-section hit too close to home and simply leaves me ill. Book highlights (or lowlights might be a better term) 33 of the worst offenders in short order with an active table of content in seemingly random order. Hard to say I really enjoyed the material, but does provide a couple of chapters on how law enforcement hunts the criminals and on internet safety which makes it an informative read. Had enough detail as for my liking and certainly hope they keep these characters out of circulation where they can't do any further harm!

Interesting but I like stories more in depth. However, if you have kids who use social media it is a good book to read and discuss appropriately with your kids. After reading this I was sitting in a hair salon with my daughter. I took a picture of a nice looking boy from a magazine and sent it to her. I acted as if I was the boy and wanted to get to know her. After, we discussed how easy it is for someone to fake an identity using social media. She was kind of surprised.

Authors provide a list of scenarios where perpetrators used social media to find their victims. Most of them used fake ads or profiles to get people to contact them and as simple as placing babysitting advertisement and waiting. It provides credible warning that one may never know whose on the other end of an ad, profile, or blog and parents must protect and teach children internet safety just as importantly as looking both ways before crossing a street.

Social Media Monsters: True Stories of Internet Killers by R. J. Parker and J. J. Slate is a compendium of 33 stories about monsters who use the Internet to locate, lure, stalk, and exploit their victims. Many of these stories are about serial killers who have been with us for a long time, but who are now able to use the efficiency of social media sites and chat rooms to lure their victims to their deaths. The book also includes sections on how law enforcement is now using the Internet in their effort to solve, and even prevent, criminal activity, and a useful section on effective ways to protect yourself when using the Internet.
A compelling read that exposes an area of criminality that knows no boundaries, and which no one is safe from. After reading this book, you’ll think twice about accepting that ‘Friend’ request from a stranger. Must-reading for anyone who uses the Internet.

I learned a lot from reading this book. The internet can be a fun, learning experience, but it can be deadly. So many trusting people request help, a need they have,or companionship and love. The evil predators go after those. The groups on the internet people join some pretend to be someone they are not to get your trust. Be careful what you ask for, don't meet up with those you meet on the internet, it could be last time your loved ones see you again. Yon can lose your identity from posting too much personal information. Facebook, twitter can be great to meet people but it can be deadly. Law enforcement uses this also to catch the thugs, they like to brag about what they did and post what they did and post pics.Watch what your children are doing on the internet, those thugs will prey after them pretending to be their age. I recommend everyone to read this book. You might think you know everything but reading about what has happened to others who made a grave mistake trusting will make you THINK
