5.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent repertoire for young voice students 7 août 2007
Par Priscilla Stilwell - Publié sur
Format: Broché
I picked up this book in order to suplement my library and to bring in music that can be used for very young voice students between 8 and 12 years old. The compilation of songs in this volume are impressive, and although the range and simplicity of the music makes the material fairly easy for a young student, the book allows a wide range of styles, tempos and other challenges such as intervals.

As always, I appreciated that this book comes with a CD, and so for us who are not so proficient at the piano, we are able to "cheat" a bit. Of course, the accompaniament for many of the songs is quite simple even for a poor pianist such as myself.

On that note, I was pleased at the simplicity of the songs from a pianistic perspective. Being a self-proclaimed poor pianist, I was easily able to go through this book and pick out every song in here.

The vocal ranges are perfect for the young student, and the variety allows for a wide range of focus areas to concentrate on. Nearly every student and teacher will find several fun pieces in this book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 This is a great book for young beginning singers 4 avril 2012

This is a wonderful resource for young beginning singers. The vocal range is appropriately limited (usually no more than an octave, and often less). The pieces are lovely folk songs and spirituals of largely American and British heritage, but there are several songs of European heritage as well. I have used this book for young singers ranging in age from 8-16, and all of them have liked the songs so far! This surprised me a little bit, as most of the students I teach are exposed almost exclusively to pop, country, and rap music, and so almost none of them have had much exposure to the classical voice and the type of literature most often sung by that type of trained voice.

However, there is something universal about the simplicity and beauty of the time-tested pieces found in this book, no matter what kind of music a student is accustomed to hearing. These pieces can be sung by students of varying vocal ability levels, and the songs can be sung in various styles as well.

The accompaniment track is really imperative for the students to learn the piece well during their own practice time at home. My more motivated students have often started learning additional songs from the book for fun while practicing their assigned songs at home! Again, the included accompaniment track makes this a lot easier for them.

Finally, I really like the fact that the melodic line is usually worked into the accompaniment and supports the young singer as they sing their melody. This has helped the students to learn the pieces more easily and with less frustration.

My suggestion to Hal Leonard, this book's publishing company: I think a CD of beginning singers ages 8-16 singing these songs in age-appropriate ways could be a very helpful teaching aid for the students as well. A number of these songs are not yet easily available on YouTube in these particular arrangements (and YouTube is a go-to source for many if not most of today's vocal students in listening to possible new repertoire). I think there could be a market for a CD of young singers in various physical stages of vocal development appropriately demonstrating/singing these songs.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Poor selection of songs. 26 mars 2013

Very unappealing selection of songs. Out of all the pieces, I found maybe 2-3 that I will actually use for my young students. The lyrics sound like things written for kids from the 1950s. In my experience, young kids today really don't get excited to sing about cowboys, flowers, future husbands, and such. And if they're not interested in the songs, what's the point? Sure, the ranges are great and there is technical content relevant to the age bracket, but other than that, meh. I wouldn't buy it again.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great for Changing and Unchanged Voices Alike 5 avril 2013

Ms. Boytim created a wonderful series of short pieces that I can use for my 6-8 grade students. The songs are fun and written in keys that are accessible to the students. The CD is also helpful for practicing and allowing students to hear how they fit in with the accompaniment, especially when accompanists are hard to come by. I will certainly be using this book again in the future for my studio as well as Middle School solo/ensemble contest.

The book clearly has a picture of a cd on the cover, it did not come with a cd. Instead there is a website that has the songs. It plays extremely quiet on my daughter's iTouch and requires her to log in each time which is extremely inconvenient for my 6 yr old.
